2. 'Twas a few nights before Christmas,
when all through the town
there was a temporary calm,
you couldn’t hear a sound.
Our hero’s in blue were working
pair by pair
in hopes that common sense would
keep them safe there.
3. All the children were playing and
didn’t care with who
while adults tried not to trigger
the anger of the few.
Politicos and baiters couldn’t keep
from choosing a side
Every network overloaded,
there was nowhere to hide.
4. When out on the roof
there arose such a clatter,
The brave in blue sprang
to see what was the matter.
Everyone else pointed up and aimed
the camera on their phone,
The blue came and stepped forward,
they would again work alone.
5. The moonlight hit the chimney,
shadows made it hard to see
that a man on the edge was up to
what, who could it be?
“Halt!” came the order,
don’t move a muscle more
raise your hands up, drop the bag,
have your knees hit the floor.
6. And with that the bearded man did
just what he was told
Everyone relaxed a bit seeing
the man was so old.
That was all that he needed,
and he moved oh so quick
someone texted while filming,
OMG, it’s St. Nick!
7. Now clear in the moonlight,
up the roofline he ran
“Stand down.” was the order
to each policewoman and man
“Listen City! Listen Suburb!
Near popping the buttons
on his shirt.
“Can’t peace be for every season
before anyone else gets hurt?
8. From where I sit as I fly
high up in my sleigh
The human race wants the same
thing, it’s as clear as the day.”
He stood all dressed in fur,
his regular “Santa” suit,
but on this night no soot,
or ashes on his boot.
9. He held an empty sack,
and his fists were clenched tight,
twitter was a flurry
#somethingisnotright.
His eyes—not a twinkle, but a
piercing dark gaze
This would certainly not be like
those other Christmas days
10. His droll little mouth was shaped
just like a bow,
and after drawing in from his pipe,
some smoke he did blow.
From the vapor came the elves,
each of whom bowed
Each one at quick glance,
looked no different than the crowd
11. Santa yelled to them all
deep from his belly,
that shook when he did so,
like a bowl full of jelly.
The elves jumped from the rooftops
and disappeared into the night
A child stepped forward and
was seen in the light,
12. Thousands saw it live on an
Instagram show
When the youth yelled up to Santa,
“Did you let the elves go?”
“So, you brought us what we asked
for?” another child cried.
“I did… see here in my bag, there is
nothing inside!”
13. Someone from the crowd yelled,
“Fake news, you’re not being fair!”
Santa laughed, “The children wanted
my elves, and now they are
everywhere.”
“What good is that to kids, bringing
elves, what will that do?”
Santa puffed, “They wanted nothing
but to be safe,
so my last gift
is my crew.”
14. “Think of me when you see a person
who looks a different way.
And please do no harm, I may want
them back some day.”
The story went viral,
children sprang from their bed,
Mothers gave praise…
perhaps nothing more to dread.
15. The people on the street saw each
person in new light.
And looked up to
hear Santa exclaim,
'ere he drove out of sight,
“Take care with each stranger and
greater care with each friend.
With my elves as your partners,
anything divided can mend.
16. Be strong and forgive the haters that
want you to fight.
And Happy Christmas to all, and to
all a good night!"
