4. WELCOME BACK!
Why is this year crucial for you, Future
Engineers?
• Because to get your engineering diploma
you NEEEEEEEED your TOEIC!
• Because you need to get ready for your
future career.
The ISMANS-Cesi English team is delighted to
welcome you again this year and we already
know that you will make great progress in
English!
Hard work and determination is all you need
to progress.
Don’t forget that we are here to help you
with your English skills no matter your
current level. Don’t be shy, the office is
always open.
5. WHY DO I ACTUALLY NEED TO LEARN ENGLISH?
• Because languages are highly valued for work.
• Because if you want to travel, you need language skills.
• Because when you can speak at least 2 languages, you can
earn up to 20% more money than someone who just speaks
one language!
• Because it can be great fun and you can make friends.
6. TRUE OR FALSE
What do you think about the following
statements? Are they true or false?
• True, the level of English of French
Engineers does not match the actual needs
in companies. You can be the best engineer
in the world but, if you can’t convey your
ideas in English it can be tricky for you as
the world of science is English-spoken.
• True again…
• True again…
BUT
58.8% of French engineers have an
acceptable level of English according
to employers. (if my math’s
correct…41,2% don’t have what HR
requires in terms of English skills)
According to a 2015 study, French
people are the worst English learners
in Europe.
One reason for the failure in learning
English is that it has never been
considered as a fundamental skill.

7. …ENGLISH IS KEY TO YOUR FUTURE ENGINEERING
CAREER…
Do you WANT TO KNOW WHY?
Because English is the language of global opportunity.
If you can prove your English-language Proficiency in the job
market then…
•You’ll be a stronger candidate for job
opportunities with global organizations
(think BIG!)
• You’ll be the one to travel across borders
to meet co-workers and clients.
• You could be a proper decision maker in
your company.
And also because especially in Engineering and Technical fields,
research papers are in English, communication in general (face-
to-face, videoconferencing, reports, newsletters, emails…) is in
English…
9. OK, SO WHERE DO YOU START?
• Practise on a regular basis.
• It’s like going to the gym and
creating a routine: just a little
amount but on a regular basis.
• Get support from your
teachers, your friends, online
friends
• Use all the tools you have
been provided with (websites,
advice, booster sessions)

TARGETS AND OBJECTIVES
12. TARGETS AND OBJECTIVES
This is a crucial year for you to progress with your English communication skills.
Many of you have had the opportunity to do their internship abroad and you probably
have already improved your English skills. Well done! Now, it’s high time you put all the
efforts into practising for your TOEIC.
We know it is hard to find the motivation because that is supposed to be your final year
at Uni., you have done an internship and know a little bit more about career
opportunities….
But, you can trust our experience as English teachers on this…You can’t expect to pass
your TOEIC test without efforts. You need to work hard from DAY 1 and if you
haven’t done it yet, well you’d better hurry.
Remember: You need to pass your TOEIC (B2 minimum) to attain your DIPLOMA.
No TOEIC = No DIPLOMA.
B2…yeah, okayish…C1…pretty good!...C2…you got it, you’re the best!!
You will only excel though by self-learning! In other words, try your best in class AND
outside no matter what!
Learn with what works best for you.
COME AND SEE US FOR BOOSTER SESSIONS! They are mandatory for some of you!!
13. BOOSTER SESSIONS : BOOST YOUR SKILLS
EVERY THURSDAY AFTERNOON FROM 14:00 –
16:00 OR 16:00 – 18:00
You will have opportunity to practise your
ENGLISH in small groups. (or even maybe one-
to-one sessions )
IT IS COMPULSORY if your TOEIC
Score/involvement in class is not sufficient
enough.
14. GLOBAL EXAM
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!
You already know that preparing for the TOEIC requires a lot of time, energy and focus.
You also know that you need to dedicate more time to practise your English during
your « freetime ».
So, GLOBAL EXAM is a very good tool to keep track of your progress!!!
Use it on a regular basis especially if you are busy doing an internship in a company
and we don’t see much of you here!!!

Engineering is one of the largest fields of study and many of the works of research and academics are recorded in English. Without fluency in English, engineering students may find it difficult to understand the concept being conveyed by the authors. Also, many modules in engineering require writing academic reports. Hence, a good fluency and grasp of English language is necessary.
An inspirational quote that students should already know.
