- 2. Reduce fuel consumption Water, bacteria and sludge are the main issues causing higher than average fuel consump- tion. Contaminated diesel results in the engine missing, reduced fuel efficiency, lack of power, excessive exhaust, engine knocking, hard start- ing, Water in the diesel also increases acid and sludge build up.
