DoReMiHope
is
a
social

for
children’s
educa:on
in
arts.
Our
programs
aim
at
empowering
children
to
express
themselves
through
performing
and
visual
arts.
We
encourage
and
nurture
various
forms
of
expression,
which
will
enrich
the
children’s
lives
and
turn
them
into
responsible
and
sensible
individuals
who
bring
happiness
and
good
to
their
world.
My
involvement
with
DoReMiHope
lays
in
my
belief
that
children
have
the

Food

Research
Associate

Cornell

Developed
system
dynamics
and
agent-‐based
models
for
studying
food
safety
and
public
policies.
This
research
was
a
startup
in
itself
and
I
laid
down
its
founda:on,
technology,
applica:ons,
and
business
implica:ons.
In
addi:on,
I
proposed
a
mobile
and
data
plaPorm
for
monitoring
food
safety
in
metropolitan
areas
and
I
pitched
my
proposal
to
leaders
of
the
College
of
Veterinary
Medicine
and
the
College
of
Agriculture
and
Life
Sciences
(CALS).
I
researched
the
feasibility
of
this
plaPorm
and
I
developed
modules
for
mobile
app
integra:on.
I
proac:vely
sought
collabora:ons
in
engineering
and
computer
science,
as
well
as
among
faculty
at
the
Vet
School
and
CALS
of
Cornell.
Without
funding
and
specific
interests
in
mobile
technology
applica:ons,
I
could
not
execute
on
this
proposal
as
part
of
my
employment
aSribu:ons.
I
made
a
healthy
drink
for
all
ages
As
a
technical
person,
I
know
that
energy
and
crea:vity
brew
fabulously
from
healthy
foods
and
drinks.
And
so
did
my
mother,
who
actually
made
the
first
recipe
long
ago,
when
I
was
a
child.
This
kitchen
experimenta:on
and
beverage
market
analysis
are
now
complete
and
I
am
ac:vely
looking
for
investors
and
managers
experienced
and
connected
in
the
beverage
industry.
Produced
from
basic
ingredients,
my
drink
brims
with
healthy
nutrients
and
does
not
have
energy
or
mood
enhancers.
To
assess
the
nutri:onal
value
and
compliance
with
food
safety
regula:ons,
I
conducted
tests
at
various
labs
and
at
Cornell’s
experimental
sta:on
for
small
food
enterprises.
In
:me,
I
have
produced
many
flavors
of
this
drink
and,
currently,
I
am
also
experimen:ng
with
lacto
bacteria.
The
popular
vote
was
also
favorable,
as
many
people
who
tasted
my
drinks
at
various
events
were
intrigued
by
the
unknown
flavors
and
aromas.

which
the

brought
together
the

I
loved
to

In

we
ventured
for

We
made

  • 1. This is my life of many stories: A mesh of Technology. Science. Culture. Motherhood. Civic engagement. CEO and Founder of esVerta visi3hemuseum.com MY STORY TOP SKILLS MY FAVS CONTACT (sample access) Felicia Milian As founder of esVerta, I lead the product and tech development and I am involved in marke:ng our technology for interac:ve experiences in museums. esVerta provides interpre:ve technology for museums to extend the outreach of educa:onal and cultural programs. Our products address the visitors' need for personalized experiences and, at the same :me, facilitate the museum's involvement in public projects and in managing the collec:ons. Museum projects involve mobile and data development, user experience, content crea:on, cura:ng a Museum-‐pedia from public and proprietary databases, mobile fundraising, and crowdfunding. Our team includes engineers, designers, and business professionals. 2013 MY STORY Founding ExecuLve Director of DoReMiHope OrganizaLon facebook.com/Doremihope DoReMiHope is a social enterprise for children’s educa:on in arts. Our programs aim at empowering children to express themselves through performing and visual arts. We encourage and nurture various forms of expression, which will enrich the children’s lives and turn them into responsible and sensible individuals who bring happiness and good to their world. My involvement with DoReMiHope lays in my belief that children have the right to seek and find their talents and grow up with a sense of confidence in all possible opportuni:es. Food safety and policy analysis Research Associate at Cornell University Developed system dynamics and agent-‐based models for studying food safety and public policies. This research was a startup in itself and I laid down its founda:on, technology, applica:ons, and business implica:ons. In addi:on, I proposed a mobile and data plaPorm for monitoring food safety in metropolitan areas and I pitched my proposal to leaders of the College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). I researched the feasibility of this plaPorm and I developed modules for mobile app integra:on. I proac:vely sought collabora:ons in engineering and computer science, as well as among faculty at the Vet School and CALS of Cornell. Without funding and specific interests in mobile technology applica:ons, I could not execute on this proposal as part of my employment aSribu:ons. I made a healthy drink for all ages As a technical person, I know that energy and crea:vity brew fabulously from healthy foods and drinks. And so did my mother, who actually made the first recipe long ago, when I was a child. This kitchen experimenta:on and beverage market analysis are now complete and I am ac:vely looking for investors and managers experienced and connected in the beverage industry. Produced from basic ingredients, my drink brims with healthy nutrients and does not have energy or mood enhancers. To assess the nutri:onal value and compliance with food safety regula:ons, I conducted tests at various labs and at Cornell’s experimental sta:on for small food enterprises. In :me, I have produced many flavors of this drink and, currently, I am also experimen:ng with lacto bacteria. The popular vote was also favorable, as many people who tasted my drinks at various events were intrigued by the unknown flavors and aromas.

DoReMiHope idea: Lovely to see how my daughter found her voice through arts and wri:ng. Like most children, Ioana had her sparkles of crea:vity and I encouraged her to produce and sustain some of these interests. Star:ng from a school project on doing something that could change the world, Ioana and I setup the ideas and strategy for DoReMiHope, an organiza:on for Romanian children. For full disclosure, DoReMiHope was actually Ioana’s idea which I am proud to have pursued to make it happen. Coursework at Cornell’s Johnson School of Management: Entrepreneurship MarkeLng emerging technologies Business data management Commercializing university science and high technology course at Cornell’s Johnson School of Management Computer studies of cellulose biofuels Research Associate at Cornell University Studied computa:onally glass proper:es determinant for efficiency in cellulosic biofuel produc:on. Intern in technology transfer Cornell Center for Technology Enterprise and Commercializa:on Iden:fied prospec:ve licensees for mul:photon endoscope technology incorpora:ng several patents. Conducted technology and market research for licensing the mul:photon endoscope to producers of medical devices for noninvasive diagnosis. Business contacts of poten:al licensees were obtained from market research and from personal interac:ons at entrepreneurship and regional development mee:ngs. 2007 Raising my daughter and helping her to conquer her fears and find her beau:ful self. Although a very happy and playful child, my girl did not speak at all at school un:l she was 8. As I then started to understand, Ioana was living in fear and yet refused to talk about her problems. I encouraged her to speak openly and to also let drawing and music help her grow stronger and more confident with every day. Coursework at Cornell’s Johnson School of Management: Business model s for bio, i n fo, and nanotechnologies Role of informaLon technology in producing and retaining business value Life change AYer living in a repressing marriage, I finally found the clarity and strength to reclaim my life and to protect my growing daughter.
  • 3. 2004 Computer modeling of protein folding Research Associate at Cornell University Simulated the folding of proteins to structures that are func:onally ac:ve and capable of performing their biological roles. Validated the u:lity of specific simula:on soYware in predic:ng mechanisms of large scale transi:ons. This computa:onal algorithm has become an important tool in monitoring protein folding, because direct observa:on is generally elusive to most experimenta:on techniques. Developed and wrote sta:s:cal analysis modules and graphical analysis tools. Probed parallel op:miza:on protocols for large scale simula:ons using minimiza:on and simulated annealing. VisiLng Assistant Professor, Research Associate at Wesleyan University I loved the small liberal arts college atmosphere and the challenge of marke:ng science to students. Teaching the largest general science course at Wesleyan was crucial for me in becoming a confident speaker in front of large audiences. Finding the tone for communica:ng with students who had modest passion and interest in physics was a tough lesson, which, nevertheless, served me well in both life and profession. I collaborated across science disciplines with molecular biologists, physicists, and chemists to discover new mechanisms in the regula:on of gene transcrip:on, the process that monitors our making as healthy humans. Proposed the new principle of conforma:onal capture in protein-‐RNA interac:on. Performed dynamics and Monte-‐Carlo simula:ons of nucleic acids and proteins. Computed sta:s:cs of nucleic acid geometry from databases of experimental and simulated data. Wrote programs of sta:s:cal analysis and protocols for simula:ng Brownian mo:on. My daughter, Ioana Emina, was born in 2002. This started for me a renewed journey of life in which the present brought together the past and future alike. I loved to read poetry and play classical music to my girl, while swirling bright colors into her first drawings. In any weather, we ventured for long walks, always singing and talking in Romanian. We made puzzles and riddles, and sought to find the beauty in everything around us. 1999 Ph.D. in ComputaLonal Biophysics from Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University : GPA 3.67/4.00
  • 4. Discovering the New World at its most vivid and powerful mark! It was a privilege to live within walking distance to world famous museums. I soon became a regular at the Metropolitan Museum and to this day, I recount all my steps along its :mes and places. At night, I used to walk and rollerblade in Central Park, happy to see how many other New Yorkers hit the trails just like me. I almost feel again that taste of adventure and silence that made us, strangers, simply smile at each other. Graduate Research Assistant at Mount Sinai Medical Center and School of Medicine Proposed a novel view of calcium-‐dependent transi:ons and found applica:ons to molecular sensors. Iden:fied a new mechanism in proteins, by which calcium binding and autoinhibi:on are compe:ng events in reaching the func:onally ac:ve state. This model for calcium affinity can be u:lized in designing sensi:zers for calcium-‐dependent func:ons and nano calcium-‐sensors wi th poten:al applica:ons in medicine and engineering. Assessed stability and convergence of long dynamics and stochas:c simula:ons of large systems. Devised a systema:c regression analysis of the equilibrium between protein states. Iden:fied principal components of protein mo:ons and correla:ons to func:on. Modeled collec:ve mo:ons in biological systems using real-‐:me experimental data. The deepest loss of people who meant the world to me. My father deceased aYer a long struggle in the aYermath of medical maltreatment. My first newborn then passed away aYer an unfortunate accident and exposure to chemicals. I was devastated and, yet, I found great support among family and friends who were there for me in those hard :mes. Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Bucharest, Romania Modeled collec:ve proper:es of nucleic acids and computed descriptors of thermal transi:ons. Coordinated laboratory sessions on applied physics to materials science and fluid dynamics. Taught mechanics, thermodynamics, and sta:s:cal physics. 1990 M.S., B.S. with honors in Physics 1988 from the University of Bucharest : GPA 10/10 1992 Sustained a book selling enterprise in Bucharest and provided rare books and limited edi:ons to college students. To increase the family’s income, I tutored math and physics to students preparing for college admission. Part of this income helped in ren:ng a house in Bucharest which, interes:ngly, I got to learn later, it was used as social salon by one of Romania’s former kings. Obtained Doctoral Fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in New York Granted funds by the Soros Open Society Founda:on in Bucharest to travel to United States. My salary and my parents’ help wouldn’t have sufficed to buy one airplane :cket! Physicist at the Ins:tute for Nuclear Power Reactors, in Pites:, Romania Conducted quality physical and chemical tests of alloys used in nuclear fuel ensembles. Performed theore:cal and computa:onal design of lakce models for nuclear fuel materials. Life change Lived in the midst of the brutal events of 1989, when the communist regime fell in Romania. I spent those days in Bucharest and also in my hometown of Sibiu, where the dictator’s son was the party leader.
