The Human Rights
Watch report for 2014
describes the Assad
regime in Syria as
waging war by killing
civilians. BBC News
reports there is "clear
evidence Syria has
systematically tortured
and executed about
11,000 detainees since
the start of the uprising".
A Molotov cocktail is

Farquhar Street, George
Town, Penang, on
Sunday morning after
a controversial banner
with the word "Allah"
is found outside the
church.
Kajang state assemblyman Lee Chin
Cheh resigns from the Selangor State
Legislative Assembly.

Pakatan Rakyat
de facto leader
Datuk Seri Anwar
Ibrahim announces
his decision to
contest the Kajang
by-election as the
PKR candidate in
February.
THE first stage of the “Kajang
Move” was a by-election held for
the Selangor state assembly seat
of Kajang on March 23. The seat
was vacated after the incumbent
PKR assemblyman, Lee Chin Cheh,
resigned on Jan 27.
Opposition Leader Datuk Seri
Anwar Ibrahim was confirmed to
stand as the Pakatan Rakyat can-
didate in the by-election. Anwar’s
election would have enabled him
to take a seat in the state assem-
bly, and possibly challenge Tan
Sri Khalid Ibrahim, a fellow PKR
member, for the position of ment-
eri besar.
However, due to the unusually
swift conviction by the Court of
Appeal in his sodomy case, his
wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah
Wan Ismail replaced him as the
Pakatan Rakyat candidate. Bari-
san Nasional, which formed the
opposition in the state assembly,
named MCA vice-president and
former Petaling Jaya Utara MP
Chew Mei Fun as their candidate.
Dr Wan Azizah won the by-elec-
tion with a majority of 5,379
votes.
On July 22, Dr Wan Azizah,
who’s also PKR president, received
the official endorsement from
party leaders to become the next
menteri besar.
On Aug 4, party secretary-gen-
eral Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Is-
mail released a 40-page document
highlighting court cases which
questioned Khalid’s integrity as
menteri besar.
According to Saifuddin, the
court cases involved an out-of-
court settlement with Bank Islam
over the RM66.67million Kumpu-
lan Guthrie Bhd shares when Kha-
lid was the group’s chief executive
officer. Khalid, however, hit back
by forwarding this issue to the
MACC.
On Aug 9, Khalid was sacked
from PKR, as announced by the
party’s disciplinary board. Khalid
said despite the sacking being
“flawed and illegal”, he accepted
it.
At a press conference on Aug
11, Khalid announced that the sul-
tan had given his consent for him
to continue as menteri besar and
claimed to still maintain the ma-
jority support. PKR and DAP later
asked Khalid to prove his claim.
Khalid also suggested that excos
(state executive councillors) who
did not support his leadership
should step down. He also said
that he would meet them individ-
ually to know their stand on his
leadership.
Four PAS state excos said they
would continue to serve under
Khalid’s administration as directed
by their party leadership, while
six excos from DAP and PKR were
discharged by Khalid.
Three days later, Dr Wan Azizah
claimed she had majority support
of the assemblymen and that Kha-
lid’s claim was invalid.
Khalid offered his resignation
on Aug 26, allowing Pakatan
Rakyat to offer at least three new
names to the Palace as the new
menteri besar.
PKR and DAP jointly nominated
Dr Wan Azizah as their sole candi-
date. PAS, on the other hand, sent
three names which complied with
the sultan’s order.
PKR deputy president Azmin
Ali was among the three report-
ed assemblymen (the other two
were PAS assemblymen) to be
interviewed by the sultan. He was
not supported by his party for the
menteri besar’s post.
He was eventually sworn in as
the 15th Menteri Besar of Selangor
on Sept 23 at Istana Shah Alam.
Dr Wan Azizah said she accept-
ed and endorsed the Selangor Sul-
tan’s decision to appoint Azmin,
and pulled out of the race.
Dr Wan Azizah (second

battle as the Pakatan
Rakyat candidate for
the Kajang by-election
following the conviction
of her husband Anwar
(second from left).
