Exceptional Lives
We envision a world in which families raising
children with disabilities become effective
advocates for their children because they are
informed about and able to access the public
resources and benefits they need to help their
children thrive.
We walk you through disability-related
processes in language you understand.

Tips and Tricks to Facilitate Communication at
Home with your Child
โ€ขThere are many โ€œevery dayโ€opportunities to help your child
develop communication
โ€ขYou can make โ€œevery dayโ€ opportunities into learning
opportunities
โ€ขWith so many of us working from home during COVID-19 the
pressures on parents are significant
โ€ขBe kind to yourself โ€“ it is a difficult balance
https://www.exceptionallives.org/
Make favourite items inaccessible
โ€ขPut highly desired or motivating items on high shelves, on a counter that your
child canโ€™t reach
โ€ขI will sometimes recommend using double sided Velcro tape and mount clear
Ziploc freezer bags with favourite toys or items in the clear bags up high
โ€ขThis will encourage your child to reach, to point, to vocalize or to verbalize to to
request their favourite items
https://www.exceptionallives.org/
Create the need for help!
โ€ขCreate the need for assistance
โ€ขPrompt them and then wait for them to respond
โ€ขFor children who are more verbal you can model for them
https://www.exceptionallives.org/
Take Advantage of Every Day โ€œTeachableโ€
Moments
โ€ข Ask your speech language pathologist to identify target words
or concepts for everyday activities
โ€ข Demonstrate: you are standing between your child and the
the way they want to go out. The concept of โ€œoutโ€ becomes
clear quickly!
โ€ข Weave your target concepts into activities
https://www.exceptionallives.org/
Choices, choices, choices!
โ€ขOffer your child something you know he doesnโ€™t like. Model โ€œnoโ€, โ€œyuckโ€ etc.
โ€ขOffer something you know they like along with something that they donโ€™t like. They
might answer you with a gesture (pointing), a vocalization (โ€œah ahโ€), a word โ€œcookie!โ€
or a word approximation (โ€œuseโ€ for juice)
โ€ขFor children who donโ€™t look at you often try to hold the choices up near your face to
encourage them to look at you
https://www.exceptionallives.org/
Give small portions!
โ€ข At snack time or mealtime give small portions of a desired food (a few sips of juice
or a few pieces of pastaโ€ and model โ€œmore?โ€
https://www.exceptionallives.org/
Modelling
โ€ข Interpret what your child is trying to say
โ€ข Label what your child is trying to communicate.
โ€ข Expand on what your child says.
โ€ข If your child gives an approximation (oos for
juice) model the word back correctly โ€œJuice!โ€
instead of saying โ€œnot oos โ€“ say juice!โ€
https://www.exceptionallives.org/
In Closing
โ€ขBe kind to yourself
โ€ขBy weaving these tips and tricks into every day life youโ€™ll be doing more than you think to help your childโ€™s
speech, language and communication to develop!
