2. INTRODUCTION
The Regency period
1811 - 1820
The historical and political
definition of the Regency is the
period from 1811 to 1820 when
George, Prince of Wales, governed
the country as ‘Regent’ during the
madness of his father George III.

3. -They hardly had legal rights
-They were not allowed to
own property
rather they were considered as
property of either their father,
brother or husband
Why women in Regency
society were exceedingly
disadvantaged.

4. Marriage was therefore
not only a social
preoccupation but a
neccessity to attain
financial security,
especially in a society
where any male family
member was preferred to
a daughter when it came
to inheritance issues

Important Facts
-Upper-middle-class and
upper-class women were
expected to be
“accomplished”, that is, to
be able to sing, draw and
play the piano among
other things
-The reputation of a woman
was of essential importance in
Regency England.
-Unmarried women were
considered “morally corrupt” if
they behaved inappropiately
towards men
6. “A woman must have a thorough knowledge of
music, singing, drawing, dancing, and the
modern languages, to deserve the word; and
besides all this, she must possess a certain
something in her air and manner of walking, the
tone of her voice, her address and expressions, or
the word will be but half-deserved."
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, 1813
7. Once married, women were
deemed to live a passive life at
home. It was their task to raise
the children, manage the
household and submit to their
husbands
8. Women’s Professions
While an affluent young woman's occupation may have been
limited to that of wife, mother, or the hunt for a husband,
during the Regency Era an educated woman of some means
could be a novelist.
Less well off-but well bred women could be a companion or
chaperone. Poverty could force a young woman of breeding to
be a governess. Poor women without the luxury of breeding
made a living as servants or sold wares.
