Overview
• Server - the one who monitors
• Targets - the things that Server Monitors

Pull approach
Prometheus uses Pull Approach, when metrics sources don’t try to be smart
and just provide their readings on demand.

How to scrape?
• For example, etcd is “Prometheus -ready”
• There are exporters for many applications

• Takes care of routing alerts from Prometheus to a receiver
• Supports: e-mail, HipChat, Slack, PagerDuty etc

Often what you monitor and get alerted on is defined by your tools, rather than what makes the most sense to you and your organisation. Alerts on metrics such as CPU usage which are noisy and rarely spot real problems, while outages go undetected. Monitoring systems can also be challenging to maintain, and overall provide a poor return on investment. In recent years, many companies have adopted service-oriented architectures by deploying tens to hundreds of small microservices. But with the increasing number of independent services, do you still know what’s going on in your infrastructure? Traditional monitoring solutions were mostly focused on machines and fell short keeping track of infrastructures where service deployments happen multiple times per day and instances get dynamically allocated on a multitude of nodes. Prometheus is a relatively new monitoring system which has gained a lot of popularity in the last two years as it was explicitly designed for today’s needs of service monitoring and container infrastructure. In this session, you’ll learn how to instrument a service with a Prometheus client library to provide information about its current health and state. In order to get automatically notified when the service becomes unhealthy, you’ll see how to configure alerts and notifications. Along the way, I’ll discuss a few important key metrics paramount to successfully monitor a microservice.

Everyone wants observability into their system, but find themselves with too many vendors and tools, each with its own API, SDK, agent and collectors. In this talk I will present OpenTelemetry, an ambitious open source project with the promise of a unified framework for collecting observability data. With OpenTelemetry you could instrument your application in a vendor-agnostic way, and then analyze the telemetry data in your backend tool of choice, whether Prometheus, Jaeger, Zipkin, or others. I will cover the current state of the various projects of OpenTelemetry (across programming languages, exporters, receivers, protocols), some of which not even GA yet, and provide useful guidance on how to get started with it.

To defend against attacks, think like a hacker. But does that mean you need to be a DevOps expert? Security researchers today need to discover new attack techniques. However, much of their focus is diverged to backend coding. We share how to build an infrastructure for researchers that allows them concentrate on business logic and writing hacker “tasks”. Using Docker and Kubernetes on Google Cloud, these tasks can then be performed in parallel and without a lot of DevOps hassle. Our technique removes two common barriers: first, long and risky deployment processes and second, low transparency within the production system. Promise to share the stupid things too.
