Undergraduate research is becoming more important in higher education as evidence of what accumulating clear, inquiry-based learning, scholarship, and creative accomplishments can do to foster effective, high levels of student learning. This includes identifying a concrete investigative problem, carrying out the project, and sharing findings with peers. The following posters are the result of undergraduate research projects conducted by Research Methods in Architecture students at Qatar University, Spring 2014.

Jon Lang, Ph.D., is currently Professor of Architecture at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, as well as Director for Urban Design of the Environmental Research Group in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Lang also taught in the Urban Design program at the University of Pennsylvania from 1970 to 1990, chairing the program during the eighties. He continued his association with Penn as a visiting Professor of City Planning through 1993. Dr. Lang has served as a consultant for UNESCO in Turkey and for the Ford Foundation in India. He is co–editor of the pioneering book Designing for Human Behavior: Architecture and the Behavioral Sciences, as well as author of Creating Architectural Theory: The Role of the Behavioral Sciences in Environmental Design.

In general concrete construction, we have seen that whatever the elements cast (beams, columns, slabs etc.) Require time for setting. This is a long drawn process necessary for hardening of concrete. However, nowadays in large scale projects, newer methods of faster construction are being explored. Fast and efficient construction of the concrete core of a building is essential to maintain phased progress on other parts of the building. Formwork is one of the most important factors in determining the success of a construction project in terms of speed, quality cost and safety of work as it accounts about 40% of the total project cost of the structure. To minimize the costs the contractor needs to complete the project as soon as possible and the client wants the building to use the building as early as possible for the intended purpose. In building construction the most efficient way to speed up the work is by achieving a very short floor cycle. That directly depends on the selected form work type for the construction.

Bamboo (Bambuseae) is a tribe of flowering perennial evergreen plants in the grass family Poaceae, subfamily Bambusoideae, tribe Bambuseae; although, the forestry services and departments of many countries where bamboo is utilized as a building material consider bamboo to be a forestry product, and it is specifically harvested as a tree exclusively for the wood it produces, which in many ways is a wood superior in strength and resilience to other natural, fibrous building materials.In fact it is often referred to as a tree by cultures who harvest it as wood. Giant bamboos are the largest members of the grass family. In bamboos, the internodal regions of the stem are hollow and the vascular bundles in the cross section are scattered throughout the stem instead of in a cylindrical arrangement. The dicotyledonous woody xylem is also absent. The absence of secondary growth wood causes the stems of monocots, even of palms and large bamboos, to be columnar rather than tapering.Bamboos are some of the fastest-growing plants in the world,due to a unique rhizome-dependent system. Certain species of bamboo can grow 35 inches within a 24-hour period, at a rate of 3 cm/h (a growth of approximately 1 millimeter (or 0.02 inches) every 2 minutes). Bamboos are of notable economic and cultural significance in South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia, being used for building materials, as a food source, and as a versatile raw product. Bamboo has a higher compressive strength than wood, brick or concrete and a tensile strength that rivals steel. The word bamboo comes from the Kannada term bambu, which was introduced to English through Malay. Construction Further information: Bamboo construction Bamboo, like true wood, is a natural composite material with a high strength-to-weight ratio useful for structures. In its natural form, bamboo as a construction material is traditionally associated with the cultures of South Asia, East Asia and the South Pacific, to some extent in Central and South America, and by extension in the aesthetic of Tiki culture. In China and India, bamboo was used to hold up simple suspension bridges, either by making cables of split bamboo or twisting whole culms of sufficiently pliable bamboo together. One such bridge in the area of Qian-Xian is referenced in writings dating back to 960 AD and may have stood since as far back as the third century BC, due largely to continuous maintenance. Bamboo has also long been used as scaffolding; the practice has been banned in China for buildings over six stories, but is still in continuous use for skyscrapers in Hong Kong.In the Philippines, the nipa hut is a fairly typical example of the most basic sort of housing where bamboo is used; the walls are split and woven bamboo, and bamboo slats and poles may be used as its support.

This paper depicts a vast knowledge on vernacular architecture of India. Vernacular architecture refers to the buildings which are constructed by the knowledge of local technology and craftsmanship, using locally available building materials; simultaneously, ensuring climatic comforts to the users. Thus vernacular architecture is related to the climatic issues, cultural and socio-economic conditions of different regions of any country. Hence, India is a country with diversified climate and socio-cultural conditions. Here, each region has its own unique characteristics of building design in the form of climate-responsive vernacular architecture. The aim of this paper is to assemble all those different types of vernacular practices throughout the different climatic regions of India.

Frank Lloyd Wright y Walter Gropius, aunque ambos figuras importantes de la arquitectura del siglo XX, pertenecieron a movimientos distintos: Frank Lloyd Wright: Escuela de la Pradera (1893-1913): Movimiento estadounidense que enfatizaba la integración con la naturaleza, espacios abiertos y la artesanía. Arquitectura Orgánica (1930s-1950s): Filosofía personal de Wright que buscaba la armonía entre edificios y naturaleza, utilizando formas naturales y materiales orgánicos. Walter Gropius: Bauhaus (1919-1933): Escuela alemana de arte y arquitectura que promovía el funcionalismo, el racionalismo y el uso de materiales modernos como acero, vidrio y hormigón. Movimiento Moderno (1920s-1950s): Estilo internacional que buscaba soluciones arquitectónicas simples y funcionales, con énfasis en la eficiencia, estética minimalista y espacios abiertos. En resumen: Wright: Pionero de la Escuela de la Pradera y la Arquitectura Orgánica, con énfasis en la naturaleza y la artesanía. Gropius: Fundador de la Bauhaus y figura clave del Movimiento Moderno, promoviendo el funcionalismo, el racionalismo y la estética minimalista.
