My Assignment at IVN
New Social Venture Fund focusing on Assistive
Technology (AT) for disabled people
Main questions:
• a. What are the capital needs of assistive
technology companies?
• b. What financial tools are available to help
these companies?
• c. What models are being used elsewhere and
what can we learn from these models?

Office of the Chief Scientist
Technological Innovation for Disabled Program
• Started in 2012
• Significant ventures are NGO’s (more familiar with the field)
- Companies: 2 years, 65% matching
- NGO’s: unlimited, 85% matching
• Built for economic prosperity rather than impact
• AT is OCS’s smallest part
• Annual budget of 6M NIS
• In 2014, each ventures got 450,000 – 500,000 NIS
• Ventures must target disabilities that are 5% or less of the
population (blind, deaf, etc.)
• 60 – 90 days from submission to get notified
• Skeptical about the fund because they started the program
assuming no one would invest in Assistive Tech ventures

Editor's Notes

  1. Started investing in 2010, has invested total 24M for 30 ventures so far. My research is for a new social fund which will only focus on AT, ivn has never touched this area before, but there’s needs in this industry and also it’ll create huge social impact. For people are 20-26 years old, 38% of the unemployed are people with disabilities , both mental and physical There is a proven connection between the ability of people to integrate into society (including employment) and the assistive technologies that they are using
  2. I want to emphasis that the AT here is affordable products for normal people, not really like expensive personalized products I did my research by interviewing and learning from paper. I interviewed total around 15 people, including AT entrepreneurs, accelerators, Chief scientist, VCs, and crowd funding I spent most of time for interviewing crowdfunding guys which is solutions I provided to IVN.
  3. Speaking for ecosystem of AT in Israel First of all, in a big picture, there’s Increasing awareness in this field
  4. Financing gap –especially at the seed stage - matching fund to the Chief Scientist, Need small approachable capital. In other industries, not every start-up wants the grants from chief scientist because of the r&d law and tidies applying process, they would prefer directly go to VCs, but all the AT ventures are willing to get the money which also proves that there’s no alternative resources they can find. Once they can get the money from Chief Scientists, you can keep applying it every year. because the target market is less than 5% of population, so assistive tec Mentoring gap– on an ongoing basis and not as part of a short term hub/accelerator Marketing gap – talk abt it in milbat case
  5. Result from 20 questionnaires
  6. Here’re 2 case studies which ivn treat them as 2 pilots for the new AT fund ALS EyeControl offers ALS portable eye-tracking communication system
  7. Half of the product designed by themselves and half designed by outsider problem
  8. 3d print products Mobile app Wheelchair gadgets
  9. Before researching possible solutions for this AT fund, I went through some other social funds business model trying to find some thing we can utilize. So generally speaking, I found 3 types of model in the world. The first and oldest model is social bonds. Criminal Solve the problem and save the money
  10. If we want to utilize the Social bonds model or Rockefeller-Yunus model for the new fund, the biggest problem is we cannot measure the impact for assistive technology
  11. 1 Nobody did that before, croedfunding don’t know impact investing and ivn has no clue for crowdfunfing, show huge interest for corporation 2 AT ventures did raise money from crowdfunding, ReWwalk and EyeControl 3 Crowdfunding needs more money from organizations and other resources and also they wanna create social impact 4 IVN don’t really know AT industry, and co-investment can reduce the risk for ivn. More social impact could be generated
  12. 2 types of crowd Ivn wants the social impact for Israel
  13. crowdfunding is not allowed in Israel and we are not doing crowdfunding 5000 to 2500
  14. (individuals that earn $200,000 a year or more, or have a net worth of $1 million) half of OurCrowd’s investment money comes from the U.S., with the rest from overseas and less than 10 percent from Israel. Smart money
