Editor's Notes

  1. Everybody stand up, we’re going to do the WAL-MART cheer! Just kidding. But I actually did see it in action during my internship. Hi everyone, welcome and thank you for coming to my final presentation. I’m Emily Olson and I am at the end of my summer internship in the EBS department on the Wal-Mart Dry team.
  2. Today I’d like to talk about….
  3. First, a little bit about myself I was born in Norwalk, CT. And growing up, I lived in many different places: in Montreal, HK, and Austria. I even went to a boarding school in MN for some time. But after all of that I decided to get to know my roots a little bit better. So I came to Omaha, NE. This is where my parents grew up. Now I am going to Creighton University, I will be a senior in the fall and will graduate in May 2016, pursuing a double major of International Business and Marketing. I’m also involved in some leadership programs: ATW and YLO. I’m very interested in supply chain in general. And someday I would love to work in imports and exports. That’s why made sure to apply for the EBS internship in order to explore that interest in supply chain a little further. And I definitely accomplished that goal during my time here.
  4. Before I came to ConAgra, I had no idea how complicated it was to get a product on the shelf of an aisle in a store at Walmart. But my role helped me understand that better. I spent my summer in the EBS department on the Walmart Dry team of Customer Order Management. The team trusted me with a full desk; I was responsible for the distribution centers of the Indy location. Every morning I started on the reports, I created and sent out the ZDNCUT report and I worked on ZDNCUT, Open Orders, Cut report, Loose Case, and DC Outs for the Indy location. I also processed orders for Indy Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. When we had promos, I wrote for and linked them. Even though I was just an intern, I felt that managing these orders was a great responsibility because I was actually making an impact and moving real product. During my internship, I got a chance to cover for some of my teammates. That allowed me to learn more about the other locations as well as additional skills such as Purple Bucket and Promo Report.
  5. Here are the steps I took to process orders, once they came in.
  6. Based on if any product was cutting or based on seasonality.
  7. Now that I gave you an overview of what I was doing, let me show you the numbers! How my team made an impact on ConAgra and on the next slide, how I made an impact on ConAgra. Walmart is our #1 customer. It accounts for 27% of ConAgra’s total revenue and 13% of that is Dry Grocery. To further explain the massive volume that WM orders from ConAgra, here’s an example! My team had about 16M cases ordered from WM from 5/18 to 7/8. That’s only an 8 week period! We fulfilled 15.7M of those cases. That makes a 98.56% fill rate, which is higher than our benchmark of 98.5%
  8. As I mentioned earlier, I created and sent out the ZDNCUT report every day. The purpose of the ZNDCUT report is to determine what product is not on delivery note Because Wal-Mart is guaranteed bracket 1 pricing, they order a full truck and receive a discounted product because of their order quantity. By adding product that has been left off the DN, it helps create a full and efficient truck, and by doing that, it helps get the fill rate above 98.5%. This helps Wal-Mart get their product and it helps us get the sales. During my entire internship, I have processed 2,006 orders, which amounted to $21M and 19.5M lbs. I was responsible for 141 promo orders over those 9 brands.
  9. My internship taught me that change is the only constant. One of the changes that I found very interesting is the implementation of Frankfort. Frankfort is the largest facility ConAgra has ever built. It spans 24 football fields. Why it’s interesting to me is because Indy orders will now be coming out of Frankfort. Walmart is the last to transition, transitioning on 9/8.
  10. During my internship, I got the opportunity to job shadow. I shadowed reverse logistics with Erika, Network with Ryan, and International CSC with Nathan. These job shadows were very valuable because it gave me some insight to how each of those departments work and now I feel that I am better able to understand how all of these departments work together.
  11. Also during my internship, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to go on the quarterly trip to WM HQ down in Bentonville, AR. I went with my manager Christine, and my teammate Marci. While we were there, we met with the sales team and I was also able to meet another intern who was placed there. I also sat in on the quarterly meetings with WM replenishment managers. During those meetings, I learned how important analysis and forecasting is to how the business works. Also while we were there, we attended WM Dry Grocery Summit. This was the first DGS that WM put on in 3 years. During the breakout sessions I learned about demand planning and supply planning. This is also where I saw the WM cheer in action! During the downtime we had in Bentonville, I was able to talk with and ask questions to Christine and Marci. I learned about how ConAgra does business, how WM does business, and how they do business together. It was overall a great learning experience.
  12. During the summer, the college recruiting team also put on some great activities for us interns. Lessons from Leaders was an opportunity for the senior leadership to come and talk to the interns about their career path, as well as any advice that they had for us. We also had a volunteering opportunity with the kids against hunger campaign. We volunteered at their packing facility and we packed 29000 meals in 1 hr! I really appreciated this philanthropic aspect to the internship.
  13. In addition to learning how to process orders and about how ConAgra does business, I also learned some pretty valuable life lessons. In this slide, I have tied in ConAgras operating principles. Simplicity: I learned how to prioritize my day. I managed my responsibilities, making sure to do the more important things before I work on the tasks that can wait.   Accountability: I learned that making mistakes is a part of learning. I had to acknowledge when I made a mistake and think critically in order to find the best solution possible. Make it a learning experience. Collaboration: I learned how to be part of a team – not only did I become part of the Walmart Dry team, but I realized that the entire company is a team. I learned this from interacting with people in our office in Bentonville and just on a day to day basis, seeing people helping each other out all the time. Imagination: I learned that I can navigate my own life path – I was able to get so much experience during my time here. Christine was very supportive of me exploring other areas with job shadows and she was happy to answer any of my questions. I can do whatever I put my mind to, as long as I have persistence and a positive attitude.
  14. That’s the end of my presentation, but I really wanted to take this time to thank all of you in this room. Because you all helped make this internship possible for me and a great experience for me. I will be able to apply what I learned to my senior year at Creighton and to my future professional and personal life. And most of all I had fun!
