The document discusses how heat therapy can benefit beauty treatments by helping products work more effectively and kickstarting the body's ability to detoxify. It provides examples of ancient Arabic treatments like ghassoul therapy and hammam that use heat from steam or hot mud wraps. These treatments are said to loosen skin and allow toxins to flow out and nutrients to penetrate deeper layers. The document also discusses how chemical peels work by creating a controlled burn to stimulate skin renewal, and how their availability has expanded from medical offices to home kits.

“The addition of heat, whether delivered
via raw thermal materials or the
application of steam, has a direct effect on
the body’s mechanism to act as a filter,”
says Dr Galadari, consulting advisor for
basharacare.com. “When we add heat into
the equation it can help topically applied
products work more effectively and can
also kick-start the bodies ability to detoxify
itself.” Meaning if you turn up the heat, you
will get results and fast.
Enter the ancient Arabic treatment
known as ghassoul therapy. This holistic
treat sees the entire body slathered from
head-to-toe with red clay. Sitting in a
thermal steam chamber, the body starts to
rid itself of impurities through perspiration.
It’s the heat that loosens the skin’s structure,
allowing for toxins to flow out of the
body and the nutrients from the clay to
infiltrate into the layers of the epidermis.
Ghassoul Therapy Dhs450 for 45 minutes,
The Address Spa, The Dubai Mall, (04)

Going one step further, the ultimate
heat-dependent-treat is the hammam. A
beauty ritual that to this day has remained
at the centre of the Islamic beauty tradition.
n our desert climes, we’re
always trying to find new
ways to escape the heat and
its consequential results –
frizzy hair and oily skin.
However, a look at the history books tells
us that using extreme temperatures has
been an instrumental part of beauty.
For the ancient Greeks and Romans,
the public baths offered heat-induced
therapy. While the East saw the traditional
hammam as the master cleanse of choice.
Fast-forward to today, and the element of
heat remains firmly on the radar. Whether
you opt for treatments designed to purge
skin of impurities or scientific skincare to
resurface the skin, there’s seemingly no end
to the benefits that only heat can bring.
The chemical peel has come on leaps and
bounds. Long gone are the days where
those on their quest for a more youthful
appearance were left running (red-
faced) from the dermatologist’s office.
What is a chemical peel and how does it
work? “A chemical peel simply works by
applying chemicals to the skin in order
to create a controlled burn to stimulate
a wound healing response and remove
damaged skin,” says Rebecca Treston, who
administers tailor-made chemical peels
to clients from Dhs400 a pop at EuroMed
Clinic, (04) 3945422.
It’s here we must note that there are
varying degrees of the chemical peel, as
Dr Frederic Brandt discloses: “Superficial
peels only remove some superficial dead
layers of the skin. The medium depth
chemical peel helps remove the upper layer
of the skin. The deep chemical peel actually
penetrates the dermis to where the collagen
tissue lies.”
The chemical peel, once only available
at the discretion of your doctor or
dermatologist is now a readily available
commodity. With pioneering skincare
brands having their low percentage
at-home chemical peel kits available to
purchase over the counter, they are tapping
into the growing awareness the consumer
has about the science of skincare.
However, it wasn’t always this way.
Cristina Carlino (the founder of skincare
brand Philosophy) changed the face of
the chemical peel pioneering the ‘lunch
hour’ peel. In doing so she bridged the
gap between the doctor’s office and DIY
dermatology. The result is a slew of clever
chemical peels to be used once a week in
the comfort of your own home, minus any
anti-social down time.

N
othing tastes as good
as skinny feels,” Kate
Moss quipped once, and
these words resulted in a media
backlash. However, while her
comment may have been a social
blunder there’s no denying that
certain feel-good emotion when
you’re able to squeeze into a pair
of skinny jeans.
As such, this brings me to the
almost taboo topic of ‘diet talk’.
There are two different schools of
thought to consider in the battle
against the bulge. The first is the
old fashioned route, which was
recently brought to my attention
by a Swedish friend – who, may
I add, is all tanned limbs, glossy
mane and flawless skin. She
informed me that, for one week
before her birthday, she was
going on The Master Cleanse, a
weight-loss method favoured by
celebrities including Beyoncé.
This diet is not for the faint-
hearted, as you can’t actually
eat anything. All meals are
substituted for a lemon juice,
maple syrup and cayenne
pepper concoction. As her
beauty mentor I endured twice-
daily status updates along with
weigh-in reports. Admittedly, I
didn’t mind the regular feed of
information, and was intrigued
to find out that after seven days
she had lost 8lbs. Result!
Across the pond our
impossibly thin Manhattanites
are taking dieting in a new,
modern direction – enter the
Manhattan Diet. This diet
differs from the extreme Master
Cleanse, as it focuses less on
what you eat and rather more
on how much you are eating.
Author Eileen Daspin explains
all about the new fad in her book
The Manhattan Diet, in which
she reveals all the stay-skinny
secrets from svelte Upper East
Siders. Marvellous!
Some of the weight-
conscious tips include removing
any temptation by banning
calorie-laden foods like peanut
butter from your home. They
also substitute cutlery with
chopsticks (to take smaller bites)
and measure portion sizes with
a teaspoon.
So, while there’s no cutting
out major food groups – which
can make you as grumpy as Joan
Rivers on a good day – there is a
Drill Sergeant-esque discipline
when it comes to portion control.
“I taste everything but eat almost
nothing,” says Daspin, who
also advocates “walking like a
maniac” (it helps burn the extra
calories apparently). Well, you
don’t hear of anyone putting on
the NYC stone.
I admire both women’s
fighting spirit and dedication
to the cause. On the one hand,
The Master Cleanse is a brilliant
detox designed to drop weight
fast and The Manhattan Diet is
a re-education on our attitude
towards food.
Yet, regardless of what
method you choose, nothing
rings more true then this: once
you’ve dieted to reach your
desired weight, in a bid to keep
the pounds at bay, the battle has
really just begun…

6. It took four different shades to create the dark lips that were seen on
the Olympia Le-Tan Fall 2015 runway. Backstage, M.A.C Cosmetics
makeup artist Karim Rahman kept us all guessing about the color
palette; accents of berry, gray, blue, and taupe were all blended to
create this statement pout and applied using the fingertips to avoid the
look of a perfect contour.
The dark berry shade was created using a new breed of M.A.C liquid
lipsticks (which haven’t yet been released to the public), which
deliver a shot of color in just one slick on the lips.
This look, inspired from British musician Kate Bush in the ‘70s
“mixed with a little British and Bourgeois decadence,” was one part
naughty schoolgirl with a certain irreverent playfulness, and one part
angelic, thanks to the luminous sheen on the skin. The dewy effect
came from a new M.A.C Cosmetics foundation and serum hybrid.
Applied to the foundation brush using the pipette dispenser, then
7. buffed lightly over the skin, it provides sheer coverage to reveal a
gleaming and even complexion.
“Nothing too girly, no eyebrows, no mascara—nothing—and no
eyeshadow on the eyelids; the focus here was all on the pout and the
satin skin,” said Rahman.
Crimped locks were also on display; the models’ hair was sectioned
into a series of little plaits that were then sealed by a sweep of the
straightening iron. After the plaits were removed, they were brushed
out to reveal big hair with plenty of added bounce. The top section
was then secured with a black elastic band to give a Catherine
Deneuve twist to the look.

There’s a real fear that the daily use of sunscreen will bring
on an unsightly bout of adult acne, however this is a myth,
especially with the new lightweight formulas on the market.
The 3LAB Hydra Day SPF 20 (Dhs315) is a water-based formula
with non-comedogenic properties (meaning it won’t clog your
pores but will save you from photo-ageing). More sensitive skins
should try Dr Brandt’s UV SPF 30 High Protection Face (Dhs130).
This hypoallergenic and fragrance-free lotion turns to a silk-like
powder on contact. To give sundrenched skin a new lease of life,
Dr Maurizio Viel recommends his Dermamelan Mask (Dhs3,500
with a 10 per cent discount for our readers who present an
issue of EW). This intensive eight-hour mask uses a trio of acids
(kojic acid, phytic acid and ascorbic acid) to fight signs of
pigmentation. Not one to try before a night out, as your face will
be a little red after treatment. Contact London Centre for Cosmetic

It’s now totally acceptable to wear make-up
to the pool (hoorah!). Dr Doris J. Day from
the Skin Cancer Foundation tells us to “look
for mineral make-up, powder sunscreen or
gel sunscreens to help minimise breakouts.
The mineral make-up sits on top of the skin
so it doesn’t get absorbed or block pores.”
Enter the star powder product: Bare Minerals
SPF 15 Foundation (Dhs96). If you haven’t
yet heard of BB creams (blemish balms), then
you’re officially stuck in your own beauty
bubble. These multipurpose miracle workers
act as an all-in-one moisturiser, primer,

from Dior, Hydra Life BB Crème SPF 30

Our compact of choice for poolside

(Dhs337) by Chanel. This cream foundation
has real staying power, and when paired
with a dusting of Lancôme’s Star Bronzer
Intense SPF 10 (Dhs230) you’re bronzed
and set for the sunshine.
Word from our Australian counterparts
has it that cult beauty product SunSense Daily

It seems that our affinity with lip gloss
is putting our precious pouts in jeopardy.
Manhattan-based dermatologist Dr Bruce

sporting layers of gloss in the sun is like
putting “a magnifying glass over your lips.”
Our antidote of choice? The Bobbi Brown
Lip Balm SPF 15 (Dhs105). Now, there’s
nothing more upsetting than newly manicured
nails going dull, or worse, changing colour

what the nail doctor ordered.

spray perfect for difficult-to-reach areas.
When browsing the beauty hall for
SPFs, keep in mind the words of David
Leffell, chief of Yale’s Dermatologic Surgery.
“At SPF 30, you get 96 per cent blockage;
at SPF 45, about 97 per cent; at SPF 60,
it’s 97.5 to 98 per cent. The higher you
go, the lesser the increment. I call it SPF
inflation.” His findings on the efficacy of
SPF render the numbers on the bottles less
important than the number of times you
reapply. Happy spritzing! n
A combination of sun, salt water and chlorine can play havoc on your locks, leaving it matted and straw-like. “Always protect your hair, like you do your
skin,” advises hair pro Zoe Irwin. Don’t be afraid to slick on moisture-infusing products, masks and protector sprays. “Rinse hair after a dip, add more
conditioner and pull hair back into a topknot,” she advises. As every faux blonde knows, it takes several trips to the hairdressers to achieve perfect beach
blonde, surfer chic tresses. So don’t let the sun fade your colour in a matter of hours. Spritz Redken’s Colour Extend Sun Solar Screen SPF 12 (Dhs95)
liberally at regular intervals. For after-sun damage control, lather on the Kerastase Masque UV Defense Active (Dhs140). It will restore hair to its former glory.

1. The nail files
A combination of saltwater, sand
and sunshine can dull perfectly
polished nails faster than you can
say “pass the sunscreen“. Move over
Shellac and Gelish, there’s a new
long-lasting polish on the beauty
block that doesn’t require a posse
of nail technicians to apply. Vinylux
Weekly Polish (Dhs50) by CND uses
patent-pending ProLight technology,
meaning the unique top coat (that
dries in eight minutes) toughens when
exposed to natural light, leaving you
with chip-free fingertips and toes for
one whole week. Enough said.
2. Lash

Ask any woman about her must-
have desert island beauty products
and mascara will always be near
the top of the list. Ask the same
woman what the biggest bugbear
of her beauty regime is and battling
smudging, flaking mascara will top
the poll. Thankfully, Max Factor have
done the unthinkable by formulating
a three-day mascara to the delight
of women globally. The Lashfinity 3
Day Mascara (Dhs107) gives 72
hours of shower, chlorine and sleep-
proof lashes. It’s all thanks to the
PermaHold technology that binds the
tint to the lashes for superior staying
power. This is one magic wand
that’s broken beauty boundaries,
with waiting lists as long as an

SOS
We’re all too aware of the harmful
effects the sun’s UVA/UVB rays can
have on our skin – hyperpigmentation,
wrinkles and, in serious cases, the
Big C. Avoiding the sun completely
is impractical in our summery region,
so SPF is a common answer – but it
can send our pores into a panic. Take
control of your face and minimise the
chance of a breakout with Chanel’s UV
Essential Daily UV Care Multi Protection
Anti-Pollution SPF50 (Dhs242). Although
lightweight in texture, this clever lotion is
a powerhouse in protection. The unique
shielding complex creates a barrier,
protecting the skin’s surface from heat
damage. Better still, this grease-free
lotion is non-comedogenic, meaning it
won’t clog your pores or lead to a post-
beach breakout.
6. Fight the fuzz
Any beauty maven worth her clout
will have her favourite waxing pro on
speed dial. But those in the inner circle
have stepped it up a notch, turning to
The Kaya Painless Laser (from Dhs250
kayaskinclinic.me). The laser uses
In-Motion Technology targeting hair right
at the follicle and weakening it. After
just six sessions your limbs are left spike
free. With an inbuilt cooling system, this
laser is in a league of its own, making
depilatory dates a delight rather than
a dread.
5. Gleam team

The delicate skin around our eye

attention when it comes to defying
the sun’s rays and deterring the

Dermalogica have developed their
Total Eye Care cream with SPF15
(Dhs209). This clever product uses
lactic acid for resurfacing, bisabolol,
hydrocotyl and spirea extracts to
target fine lines and reduce puffiness,
while the non-chemical sunscreen
defends the area from sun damage.
We suggest keeping it in the fridge
for a wake-me-up shot of hydration
every morning.

EW GOES BACKSTAGE WITH
THE ARTISTS RESPONSIBLE FOR
CREATING THE WORLD’S MOST
BEAUTIFUL FACES
THE MAKE-UP
B I O : Peter Philips became fascinated
with beauty while working as a model
dresser backstage at Paris Fashion Week.
After graduating in 1993 he decided to
focus on building his portfolio of work,
admitting:“I was a huge fashion victim
in those days, and I saw something in
make-up that was intricately linked to
fashion but didn’t require having to make
a collection.“ Philips became renowned
in the industry for his avant-garde take on
beauty. It was while working on a Fendi
shoot that he met Karl Lagerfeld, and
in 2008 he was asked to join Chanel,
where his creative flair has flourished.
From pearl-adorned backbones to body
art and green nail varnish, he gives
make-up its cool factor.
THE EYES: “First, I
applied black StyloYeux
Waterproof 10 Ébène eye-
liner, on and under the eye,
and layers of Inimitable
Waterproof black mascara.
I did a metallic shine on
the eyes, by using a layer
of Illusion D’Ombre 84
Épatant all over the eyelid
up until the eyebrow, and
under the eye from the
inner corner all the way
under the eye.”
THE LIPS:“I did a 'glossy'
shine on the lips by using
Lèvres Scintillantes 164
Plaisir on top of a dash of
Rouge Allure 89 Gracile.”

THE BRIEF FROM KARL:“Shine,
silver and focus on the eyes.”
THE MODELS: Sigrid Agren and
Cara Delevingne.
THE SKIN:“I tried to put different
types of shine in the look, starting
with luminous, shiny skin, by using
Vitalumière fluid foundation.”

B I O : In 1984, Tom Pecheux, then 18, headed
for Paris on a mission to become a pastry chef.
While out at Le Palace (a Parisian nightclub) he met
a make-up artist who opened his eyes to a career
in beauty:“There was a little bell in my head and
it went, ding, ding, ding. I didn’t know make-up
artistry could be a job.”Having worked tirelessly
on his portfolio he started working backstage dur-
ing fashion week. He explains:“It’s my favourite
part of my job, when you do shows, it’s amazing.
You get four hours of preparation, then 10 magical
minutes of the show, and then you move on to the
next one." His list of famous faces includes Princess
Diana, CharlizeTheron and Julia Roberts. In
2007 he had a stint working for cosmetics brand
Shiseido, then in 2009 friend, MarioTestino,
helped him form a relationship with Estée Lauder
where he has since remained at the helm.

THIS SEASON:“It’s a
playful trend, using a very
pastel, aqua palette.”
THE MODEL: Constance
Jablonski.
THE SKIN:“For the face,
the Pure Color Illumination
Powder Gelée Blush in
Tease is a mix between a
blush and a highlighter. It
is fresh and sweet, giving
you a glow and a touch
of colour.”
THE EYES:“I think fashion
loves colour [and with the
help of Pure Color Five
Color EyeShadow Palette]
you can use the dark char-
coal shade to frame the
eyes, the light pink under the
eyebrow to highlight, and
the taupe or violet to create
a crease. The aqua blue
will eventually go on the
eyelid as the main focus.”
THE LIPS:“Our Pure Color
Sheer Matte Lipstick is the
perfect combination of a
lipstick and a pencil. The
coverage and stability are
like a pencil so you can use
as a base, line your lips or
hideanimperfection,butthe
colour and the texture is like
a lipstick. It’s a two-in-one.
You can use it alone or you
can also layer it with gloss
or another lipstick.”

B I O : In the 1970s, Olivier
Echaudemaison started his career as
an apprentice for Alexandre, a famous
hair stylist. He reminisces:“At the time
there were no make-up artists for photo
shoots. The cover girls of the 1970s did
their own make-up. I learned so much
just by watching them.”Destined for
big things, Olivier’s skills were quickly
recognised and he was snapped up
by prestigious clients, including Princess
Anne and Princess Grace. He also
worked with Hollywood’s most gorgeous
legends including Audrey Hepburn and
Sophia Loren. After creating the cosmetics
line for Givenchy, it was in 2000 that
Olivier joined Guerlain.“It was such a
thrill to become the Creative Director
for a house with products that had truly
revolutionised make-up.”

THE MUSE: Natalia
Vodianova.
OLIVIER ON NATALIA: “She
is charming, with her square
face and her unique look. She
never looks overdone and has
an extremely classic beauty. She
has a softness about her and
could easily be a beauty of the
past, present or future.”
THE SKIN:“If you pick the
right foundation you can have
wonderfulskin.Inthepast,foun-
dation was heavy and cakey;
it looked like a mask. The new
textureoffoundationmeansyou
can have a really translucent
looking finish and achieve skin
perfection.”Finish skin with a
dusting of Météorites Perles Du
Paradis –“The make-up world
would not be the same after
Météorites.”
THE EYES: The Ecrin 4 Couleurs in
Attrape-Coeur is the perfect palette.
Olivier says:“This spring purple is the
new black. [For eyeshadow] if you
don’t want to wear it with an eyeliner,
use the darkest tone in the palette and
brush it along the lash line.”What
you must always remember is a coat
of mascara on lashes. Olivier adds:“If
there is a woman alive who dares to
show her face in public without mas-
cara, raise your hand now!”
THE LIPS:“Lipstick is number one for
me… at night it is a must. For longev-
ity the trick is to shade your lips with
a lip pencil and after you apply the
lipstick it will stay put.You can always
add a little gloss to revive the colour.”

T H E B I G S M O K E
A charcoal-rimmed eye is a tried and tested beauty tool in the art of
seduction. Picture Tom Fords' archetypal runway Gucci Girl of the
1990s, all sooty-eyes and flawless skin. No one loves a cat-like eye
more than British make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury, a firm favourite of
Kate Moss, who recommends for a feline eye to“use a light colour
eyeshadow in the inner corner of the eye,”and“always apply mascara
by dragging the lashes outwards, rather than up, to exaggerate the
shape of the eye.”
For a foolproof application, the Dolce&Gabbana Femme Fatale
palette (Dhs322) should be shortlisted for a beauty award. With its
four contrasting shadows, incased in a ruby inspired compact, it’s a
powder room treasure. To give the illusion of pore-perfect skin, a dusting
of Make Up Forever’s HD Microfinish Powder (Dhs140) should be your
finishing touch as you’re running out the door.

With red being the obvious choice to vamp up your failsafe LBD, why not stand out from the sea of identikit crimson pouts by opting for a more blue-toned
raspberry lip. Kanebo Sensai’s The Lipstick in No 19, Sawarabi (Dhs245) is a perfect colour match and when layered with Lancôme’s Juicy Tube No11in
Vigorous Fruit (Dhs100), your lips will become seriously high-voltage.
Lancôme’s make-up artistic director, Aaron De Mey, gives us a lipstick application masterclass:“Depending on the intensity you’re looking for apply with
fingertips for a tattooed lip effect, or with a brush for lacquered lips with a perfectly defined contour." He also advocates the use of lipstick to highlight the
cheekbones.“A great way to choose the right shade is to match the natural colour of the inside of your lower lip. Dab a small amount onto the apples of your
cheeks, and use your fingers to blend it high on the cheekbones.”With the mere mention of a multi-tasking lipstick, count us in!

There has been a 1970s revival of late with the colour purple topping the bill as the headlining act. Not an altogether obvious choice
for the eyes, yet, creative make-up director for Estée Lauder, Tom Pecheux swears by it:“Violet makes brown eyes richer, greens
greener, and blues more intense.”On that premise alone, women everywhere should be stocking up on the powerful pastel hue. The
key here is to use two contrasting shades. Slick a deep purple liner like The Eyeliner Crayon Intense in Imperial Topaz (Dhs100) by
Dolce&Gabbana across the bottom lashes to give an added richness. Finishing the look with a sweep of one of four exquisite plum to
lilac shades from Guerlain’s The Écrin 4 Coleurs Eyeshadow in Les Violettes (Dhs271) across the lids. Why not treat yourself, as not only
is this pretty palette functional, it also looks good enough to eat. n
