26. ALZERINA’s Jewelry and clothing designer Alzerina Gomes is best known for her creative
designs utilizing Swarovski Crystals. Born and raised in the remote village of Portalzinho Garca
on the island of San Antao, Cape Verde, Alzerina received her first sewing lessons from her
mom at the age of four, waking up her life-long passion for creating beauty.
Alzerina left Cape Verde for Paris in the early 1990 where she learned the craft of
jewelry making while enjoying a brief career as a model. Alzerina fell in love with the
Swarovski brand and it was at this time in her young life that the idea of becoming a
jewelry designer blossomed.
In 1998, Alzerina left Paris for New York City and launched her own eponymous
company, Alzerina llc, which has grown to have a presence in New York, Paris and
Cape Verde. Elegant designs, enhanced by the use of Swarovski elements and her
youthful Alzi line of contemporary bracelets, earrings and necklaces flaunt a craft
and style as unique as the women, herself. The organic simplicity of Alzerina’s jewelry
sparkles with grace and sophistication.
Alzerina’s jewelry can be found in fashion magazines and on the sets of
Warner Bros. and Disney productions. Numerous celebrities including Sharon Stone,
Olivia Wilde, and Tracy Bergman wear her jewels. Miss Universe 2013, Miss USA 2013
and Miss Teen 2011/12 are among her clients. Last year, Alzerina designs lit up
Times Square when her products were featured on the NBC electronic billboard overlooking
New York City’s most famous tourist destination.
Alzerina’s hard work and efforts have been recognized well beyond fashion circles.
The American Embassy, Praia, Cape Verde highlighted her accomplishments as a woman
entrepreneur two consecutive years at the annual Cape Verde International Trade Fair (FIC).
She received special recognition from the United States Congress for her contributions toward
preserving Cape Verdean culture in the United States. Alzerina continues to conduct
workshops for disadvantaged teens and she has been asked to represent a U.S. initiative
to further entrepreneurial skills and marketplace capability for women in emerging
African countries.Alzerina remains dedicated to her craft and is always expanding her
ideas and trying tostay ahead of the trends.
