Name: Dr. Eduardo Pereira
Title: Physical Therapist, Doctor of Physical Therapy (PT, DPT)
Originally From: Eduardo was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and was raised in Brazil where
he obtained his first Physical Therapy degree. His studies and experience encompass two
continents and diverse cultures. Eduardo has been living in NYC since 2006.
Education: Eduardo graduated from a 5 years Physical Therapy Baccalaureate degree at
Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), elected the best University and the best PT
department in Brazil for several consecutive years. The PT curriculum at UFMG is a rigorous
CAPTE approved program, in a world-renowned university, firmly established as a model of
excellence. UFMG is one of Brazil's largest universities (public funded universities offer the
best quality education in Brazil), within the top 10 best universities in Latin America and
alumni include world famous personalities and Presidents of Brazil. As a PT student at
UFMG, Eduardo had accumulated scholarships and awards and had published several
scientific articles in multiple lines of research. He had extensive experience with sports
injuries and had worked with a professional Brazilian soccer team. Recognizing the great
responsibility of being a mindful PT and the role of “transform society by optimizing movement
to improve the human experience”, Eduardo have recently finalized the University of
Montana's DPT Program which has nationally-recognized “All Star” faculty, most of whom
literally written the book or are the internationally recognized authority in their subject area. As
a DPT student he had obtained Honors and recognition from the faculty.
1. What are your personal interests (please list 3)? Have any of these interests helped
prepare you for working as a Doctor of Physical Therapy?
 Learn. A enjoy learning a little about everything outside my field of practice and
especially trying new things, exploring the world as it presents to me, enhancing my
experience in this journey. Most importantly, I love challenges. I appreciate art,
music, and different cultures. Thus, I like to learn a lot about music… listening to it but
also trying to sing, playing different instruments and exploring different genres of
music… We grow and learn with different experiences so besides speaking fluently
Portuguese and Spanish I have interest in learning French, Italian and other
languages. In that respect, there’s no other place like NYC to be!
 Helping others. I like to give back to the community and helping people find solutions
that meet their specific needs. My former soccer coach from high school taught me
always to watch out for the other guy. If you do, he will cover you when you need him
too. I have applied that principle throughout my life.
 Adventure: I am fascinated about movement and I enjoy traveling to different places
where I can ride a bike or a motorcycle. It's a peculiar and deeply gratifying
experience when I get to know different places in that kind of perspective and
experience. I think the interplay of movement and stability riding a bike has a deep
relation on how the body regulates its biomechanics and allows all this synergistic
movement to occur. It's a deeply gratifying aspect of why I love what I do.
2. If a friend or family member had to describe you in one word, what would it be and
why?
Honorable. A person who deserves my attention and my loyalty, receives it.
3. What is your favorite physical activity?
I enjoy a physically active lifestyle, practicing running, biking, kettlebell, hiking and playing
soccer with friends. It helps me to live a balanced life. My other favorite activity is Yoga and /
or Pilates. It helps me to stay calm and better understand my own body.
4. Who is your all time favorite athlete?
Ronaldo. The first time I saw him play was at Cruzeiro. He was still a kid but already a genius.
This game he ended up scoring five goals. He is now a retired Brazilian soccer player.
Popularly dubbed "the phenomenon", he is considered by experts and fans to be one of the
greatest football players of all time.
Ronaldo is regarded by many in the sport as one of the greatest and most complete forwards.
On one on one situation, Ronaldo would often use elaborate feints to trick and beat defenders
and goalkeepers.
5. What are your favorite websites?
ESPN; AllTrails; cifraclub; Motorcycle-usa; LinkedIn/Pulse; Pinterest,
6. What is your favorite App relating to Health or Wellness?
Medscape; Headspace; Map my run; DoctorOnDemand; PatientsLikeMe
7. Why did you become a doctor or practitioner?
First of all, I like to help people while interacting with them. And I am fascinated with the
human movement system. I like physics, mechanics and health related subjects such as
anatomy, physiology, biophysics, biochemistry, biomechanics, kinesiology, movement
patterns and there is nothing better than apply the principles of mechanics to the body as
PT’s do.
I also like the hands on aspect of the Physical Therapy profession and the conservative
treatment is amazingly beautiful. The healing potential of human touch has been notable
since ancient times. But the sensitivity of a PT's hands associated with an special interest of
how the body regulates its biomechanics and the interplay of movement and stability allows
that touch distinguished power. To be a Doctor for me is to share the responsibility of
improving the condition of a human being and to (re)habilitate my patients teaching them how
they could heal and stay healthy by themselves.
8. What drives or inspires you to help patients?
“ The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new
eyes”
Marcel
Proust
I like to provide very important contributions in the lives of my patients and I have an endless
desire for getting my patients pain-free and functioning again. I am grateful to help people, to
collaborate effectively with colleagues and there is no such feeling for me as helping a person
to get back on activities that are important to their lives or even enabling them to perform
simple things with no difficulty.
In my daily clinical practice I have noticed, "The eyes can see only what the mind already
know". As I am in a constant learning process, I feel as if I have “new eyes” every single day.
These “new eyes” have guided me in my approach and my philosophy is implying the host of
my skills to improve someone’s overall mobility and movement. Finally, finding work you love
is essential to living a healthy, balanced life. I am fortunate that I have found work where I can
help people have better lives.
9. What has been the most rewarding part of working as a DPT for you personally?
Collaborative care and recognition of our services.
10. What is the most valuable thing you provide to your patients?
To sum up: My treatment approach and my knowledge.
As a PT I have delivered a high quality of care and I have a personal commitment to
excellence in patient care and scientific thinking.
I have applied a combination of exceptional manual therapy techniques, the prescription of
precise corrective exercises and joint stabilization through muscle activation and motor
control to address the demands of each individual. The patient education in physical therapy
techniques, fitness, general wellness, and ergonomics is key. I work one-on-one with each
patient to ensure that their treatment goals are met. Therapy programs are continually
reassessed to monitor changes and improvements in a patient’s condition. My knowledge is
strongly grounded on research and my treatment philosophy is permeated by an array of
theories that are all integrated in a model to compose joint alignment and function, stability
control and optimal human performance.
11. What is one piece of healthy advice you have for your patients?
Remain active, whenever possible. The help you need will be to understand how... the results
will be a mere consequence.
I personally believe that the causes and consequences of an injury can extend beyond those
observed in the affected tissue and for this reason, I consider of paramount importance a
comprehensive movement analysis assessment of each patient.
12. Do you have any specialty certifications?
Yes. I am highly trained in Pilates Mat, Reformer and Cadillac. I have also just finalized in
2015 my Post professional Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at The University of Montana
- College of Health Professions & Biomedical Sciences.
I am currently completing an extensive curriculum to obtain a Certificate Program in Allied
Health Administration (CPAHA) taught by nationally recognized experts. I'm at the moment
finalizing "Implementing value based system change in rehabilitation" and "Leadership to
develop innovative clinical practice for value based care". Thereafter, I'll write a capstone
project encompassing "System skills to thrive in a changing health care environment".
In the midst of so many changes in the healthcare environment, I'd like to highlight the
importance of disruptive ideas to get around the current business model and demonstrate the
value of our services ("the value equation") in order to drive system change, pursuing several
important goals. To name one, "meeting" the institute for health improvements (IHI) Triple
Aim.
The CPAHA will prepare me to become a future manager and leader in the evolving
healthcare environment solving the challenges we face. The program is directed by Michael
Friedman, PT, MBA and Director of Rehabilitation Therapy Services at The Johns Hopkins
Hospital. And additional Faculty includes:
*Alan Jette, PhD, Director of Health & Disabilities Research Institute, Health & Disabilities
Research Institute, Boston University School of Public Health
*Mary Stilphen DPT, Senior Director, Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy, and a member of the
Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Cleveland Clinic.
*Justin Moore, DPT, Executive Vice President, Public Affairs at the American Physical
Therapy Association
*Jason Richardson, DPT, Senior Vice President of Regulatory and Business Affairs for
Results Physiotherapy
* Kelly Daley, PT, MBA, Clinical Informatics Program Coordinator at The Johns Hopkins
Hospital
13. Tell us your favorite Orthology patient success story?
Here is a recent thank you email of a dear patient of mine:
Dear Eduardo,
When I first walked into your facility I was in extreme pain and couldn't walk without a cane
and 2 Alleve pills. Today was my last session with you and I can't thank you enough for the
attentive and focused and, I must add, healing approach you gave to each session. You
understood my physical limitations and instantly knew what was needed to help relax the tight
muscles and where I was experiencing pain. I appreciated how you explained the muscular
system, why I was having pain and what was needed to treat the areas that were painful. You
introduced me to different exercises and were creative in modifying them when they were too
difficult for me to do. Yet you challenged me to do different exercises that would strengthen
my core and different parts of my body while always reminded me to respect my body and
respect the pain. You stressed the importance of not overdoing any of the exercises you
gave me to do at home that would cause more pain and injury.
While I understand that all of this is part of your job, I have to say that I felt that you truly
cared about your patient's total well being in a holistic way. In our conversations I very much
appreciated how you would encourage me to do breath work, meditation, water aquatics and
to seek other forms of healing modalities, i.e., acupressure, etc, that would facilitate my
overall health. I've been treated by several other physical therapists after my 2 knee
replacements and for a tear in my rotator cuff, and while they were all good, none of them
worked in such an attentive, caring and patient way as you did. I always left your treatment
sessions feeling much, much better than when I arrived but, more importantly. encouraged
and motivated to take better care of my body and health.
Eduardo, I have to say that not only are you a wonderful therapist but an exceptional and
caring person as well. Thank you again for getting me back on the road to health. I now can
do Tai Chi and gentle aerobic exercises without any pain for which I extremely grateful.
With deep appreciation,
P.C.R.
