What Is Convergence?
Convergence is the description of efforts to use the different strength of various
media to reach broaderaudiences, telling the world’s story in a variety of ways.
Technological capabilities were established to allow for cheaper and widespread
implementation. Convergence came up at the InDesign user group in the context of
developing for Apple products and other sources of media. It transforms industries
that are established, has services and work practices and enables new forms of
content to emerge. Convergence grew rapidly into the world and is used on a daily
basis.
Convergence has several examples suchas Encyclopedia Britannica’s online
subscription service, the Wall Street Journal’s overlap with FoxBusiness News,
and the Washington Post’s partnership with NBC. Thoseexamples are the
collaboration between, or fusion of, at least two types of media in mutually
beneficial projects. It usually involves a process that decouples content from
media, allowing the same story or entertainment to exist in multiple forms. The
different types of convergence such as Newsroom, Newsgathering, and content are
in direct competition for advertiser market share. But, in certain cases,
convergence and collaboration among these competitors are beneficial. For
example, on the reality television show “Love & Hip-hop Atlanta “, producers use
the Internet to drive their opinions on the show and voting by using hashtags on
Twitter to promote upcoming episodes. Without convergence, the media wouldn’t
be able to work as fluently as they are today.
In all summary, Convergence is a cluster of inter-related technical
organizational, and managerial innovation. Although this may seem new,
convergence is not a new concept. Early radio stations partnered with newspapers
to read news on the air, which made them come together for the purposeof the
industry. The advantages aren't found in a new range of productand systems. It’s
all in the dynamics of the relative coststructure of all impacts to production. At a
more general level, Print newspapers and magazines depend more on their Internet
presence for income and audience reach, while the websites producecontent for
television, radio and print pages to reach different populations. Keep in mind, as
technology increases in ubiquity, convergence also increase.
