Success Story
2012
"Mr.Eddie Powell broughthis enthusiasmand winning ways to our
Accelerated Reader program this year.Accelerated Readeris a
reading incentive program.Students read books,take a computer-
based comprehensionquiz, and the readeris able to be awarded
points for their correctanswers.Points are redeemable for prizes. The
program hit a slump in January2012 and Mr.Eddie steppedforward
with an idea to increase studentparticipation in this program.
The program"I Got Paid 2Read2" was Mr.Powell's new incentive for
Maplewood students. Students who met their goals for the year would
be rewardedwith certificates and brand new $2.00 bills. He personally
promotedthe new incentive to students in their classrooms,in
the hallway,in the cafeteria, and throughour closed circuitTV
broadcasteverymorning.
Additionally,he reached outto the community for businessesand
individuals who would donate moneyfor the $2.00 bills. Becauseof
his tireless efforts, enough moneywas raised to award 354 students
their $2.00 prize and certificate!
Mr.Powell set a goal for our school,as well as for himself, and made
it happen. His determination and enthusiasm is remarkable!"
Sincerely yours,
