Yahoo mail's new app ditches passwords

  1. 1. To celebrate Yahoo Mail’s 18th birthday, the company has rolled out a totally revamped Yahoo Mail app that says it’s faster, more beautiful and more intuitive than ever before. The new app has been designed from the ground up and it focuses on speed and simplicity. It comes with several new features, while also dumping passwords. It is the first app from Yahoo that features the company’s password free sign in technology that it calls Yahoo Account Key. What’s this all about?
  2. 2. Yahoo security Yahoo has been working to improve email security in the wake of repeated hacks of the service over the years, the most prominent occurring early last year when it had to reset users’ passwords after hackers stole an undisclosed number of them. The password free feature may be an extension of the secure disposable passwords capability Yahoo introduced in March 2015.
  3. 3. App features Yahoo Mail will also finally gain multiple mail management platforms with this update. Users can access and manage their Outlook, Hotmail and AOL mail accounts from the new Yahoo Mail app as well as through the browser interface. Each connected mailbox will get access to Yahoo Mail’s features such as smart contacts, auto suggest and search. The new app will make avatars more attractive to the eye by pulling curated photos from Flikr to show the sender’s initials, it introduces new swipe gestures to quickly go through messages, adds a Yahoo news icon in the top right corner and provides powerful contact cards to better manage everyone in the address book.
  4. 4. App features The new sign in experience will use push notifications to, for example: if a user wants to sign in on their desktop they will need to enter the User ID and then a notification will be pushed to their phone. If the notification is accepted they will then be signed in. If the notification is not accepted then Yahoo will not provide access to the account. How users will react to the change, remains to be seen, but the company is taking an eat your vegetables approach to combat the security vulnerabilities caused by weak passwords that are easily forgotten, easily hacked and typically shared across multiple personal accounts.
