3. Apprentice Levy - A recap
• The apprenticeship levy, launched April 2017, requires all UK employers with an
annual pay bill of £3million to pay 0.5% of their pay bill to invest in apprenticeship
training
• Fund a step change in apprenticeship numbers and quality; putting apprenticeship
funding on a sustainable footing and helping to deliver on the Government’s
commitment for 3 million apprenticeship starts in England by 2020
• Give employers genuine control of the training they buy - purchasing the
apprenticeship training that they need from the provider(s) that they choose in
order to grow the skills of their business
• Employers who pay the levy and are committed to apprenticeship training will be
able to get out more than they pay in, through a 10% top-up applied to their
apprenticeship service account
• For non-levy paying employers government will
contribute 90% towards the cost of their
apprenticeship training

• From April 2018 10% of annual funds to other employers (not limited to supply chain)
• Review disadvantage and LDD funding
• Public commitment to review current support for those from disadvantaged backgrounds
and identify more effective ways of supporting them in future, and review of support for
those with LDD needs
• Transitional funding on frameworks
