1. I WISH I WERE HIM
Do what you will, the time will probably come when you will want the advice of a
PHYSICIAN... Choose a sensible personality that is agreeable with your personality, possibly
one you know to have a good educational background, who stands out well with the members of
his own profession and one who is highly respected by his colleagues ,other scientists as well as
physicians. Having chosen your medical adviser, be reluctant to leave him except for good cause.
He has served on apprenticeship to your constitution' Oliver Wendell Holmes,M.D
'Rest is for the weary, sleep is for the dead' is his daily galvanising catchphrase to his
student. Justice Mohammed Lambo described him at a symposium of Dignitaries in the honour
of this horizon role model of mine, the first youngest African Professor as a symbol of humility
and a God-fearing cynosure , declaring that with the likes of him in Nigeria, the future of the
continent would be brighter and urged all Africans to aspire and become a transformation
ambassador like this historic luminary. This August figure,a fantastic creature in the field of
Medicine, an intellectual man of great repute, African's most adored and distinguished
Academics and Physician, who was born on 17th July,1933 in the ancient town of Ondo,
Nigeria. At the age of 18, he had a hearty passion for the sick and tropical medicine and also a
quest for excellence and idolatry, which has served as an impetus throughout his course of
greatness; Attended London University-the Royal London Hospital, where he received his
MBBS(1958), obtained a Diploma in Tropical Medical and Hygiene in 1960 from Liverpool
University, received a Doctor of Philosophy from Balliol College, Oxford University in 1964,
along side became a fellow physician in West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in
cardiology, internal medicine, also FRCP, FAS. He became a professor at the age of 35, a
recipient of the famous Boehringer Ingelhein Award of the International Society of
Hypertension,Sao Paulo,Brazil and also honoured by Hallmark of Labour Foundation for his
contributions to Medicine and University Administration. He was selected due to extensive
research to lives, successes and contributions to humanity.
This Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Prof Oladipo Akinkugbe, a contemporary of Nobel
Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, does not believe however that their generation was wasted and
also is interested in the progress of young people who will take after him. This has given him
respect and made him a reference point to everyone in and outside the field of Medicine. My
mountainous adoration has given me a boundless passion for medicine especially in the field of
cardiology (internal medicine) and public health. It has also pellucid, the fact that achievement is
the beginning of a new challenge. This emeritus professor served as World Health Organisation
(W.H.O) Expert on Health Manpower, World Health Organisation (W.H.O) Council Member on
Health Research, World Health Organisation (W.H.O) Technical Discussion on University and
Health for All, World Health Organisation (W.H.O) Adviser on Health Research, Visiting
Professor of Medicine, Harvard University, Member Board of Trustees,African Association of
Nephrology (1986), International Society of Hypertension (1982-1990), Editor,International
Publications like Kidney International (1990), Blood Pressure (1991), Journal of Hypertension
(1984-1990), News of Physiological Sciences (1992), etc and has published books,
journal(international and national) and reports (international and national).
My pen is not to explain the physiology and properties of genius but to say that Emeritus
Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe, Einstein of Medicine,is a figure that should be adored. '"f i have
seen further it is by standing on ye shoulders of heros". Sir Isaac Newton.
