2. Silence and Solitude
Silence – the voluntary and temporary absence of
speaking so that certain spiritual goals can be
sought
Solitude – voluntarily and temporarily withdrawing
to privacy for spiritual purposes
Although they can be separated, we will think of
them as a pair
3. Silence and Solitude
There are times when we might prefer to
be alone and there are times where we
may be around people
A balanced life should have times of both
solidarity and community
4. Silence and Solitude
Our world is LOUD!!!!
If we aren’t careful we will seemingly
never find any “peace and quiet”
5. Silence and Soltitude
“We are less frequently alone with our
own thoughts and God’s voice.
Because of this, and because we are
the most urban, noise-polluted
generation ever, we have an
unprecedented need to learn the
Disciplines of silence and solitude.”
6. Reason for Practicing Silence and
Solitude #1 – to follow Jesus’ Example
Matthew 4:1
Matthew
14:23
Mark 1:35
Luke 4:42
7. Reason #2 – To hear the Voice of God
Better
Elijah did this on Mount Horeb where he heard
the gentle whisper of God’s voice (1 Kings 19:11-
13)
The Apostle Paul went away to Arabia after his
conversion so he could be alone with God
(Galatians 1:17)
Can we hear the voice of God during the course
of the day? Yes… But it can be easier oftentimes
to be undistracted, uninterrupted in order to
hear the voice of God
8. Reason #3 – To Express Worship to God
Habakkuk 2:20 – not just silence,
but silence before Him!
Can be closely associated with
meditation
Sometimes the best way to
worship God is with a shut mouth
and an open heart
9. Reason #4 – To Regain a Spiritual
Perspective
Step back and get a balanced, less worldly
perspective on matters through silence and
solitude
We are oftentimes unknowingly being influenced
by tv, radio, etc. We should seek God in His Word,
prayer, and silent reflection
Distractions are at every corner, we need an
opportunity to recharge our batteries and be
comforted by God
10. Reason #5 – To Grow in our
Understanding
Focus on Who God is
Focus on what He has done
Focus on who we are
Focus on what is truth
Focus on what God would have us to do
11. Reasons for Silence and Solitude
To follow the example of Jesus (Mt. 4:1ff., 14:23; Mk.
1:35; Lk. 4:42)
To hear the voice of God better (1 Kin. 19:11-13; Hab.
2:1; Gal. 2:17)
To express worship to God (Hab. 2:20; Zeph. 1:7)
To express faith in God (Ps. 62:1-2, 5-6; Isa. 30:15)
12. Reasons for Silence and Solitude
To seek the salvation of the Lord (Lam. 3:25-29)
To be physically and spiritually restored (Mk.
6:31)
To regain a spiritual perspective (Lk. 1:20, 63-64)
To seek the will of God (Lk. 6:12-13)
To learn control of the tongue (Prov. 17:27-28;
Eccl. 3:7b; Jas. 1:19, 3:2)
