This document provides an overview of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) including prevalence rates, characteristics at different developmental stages, common co-occurring conditions, and sensory processing issues. It discusses the major types of ASD including childhood autism, Asperger's syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder-NOS, childhood disintegrative disorder, and Rett's syndrome. Prevalence of ASD has increased significantly in recent decades to an estimated 1 in 150 children. Core challenges involve social skills, communication, and repetitive/restrictive behaviors. Sensory processing issues are also common.
