2.  A board-certified dermatologist, Coyle Connolly,
D.O., has been recognized as a “South Jersey Top
Physician” for his work in clinical and cosmetic
dermatology. As a member of the American
Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and as the head of
one of the top 1 percent of dermatological practices
nationwide, Dr. Coyle Connolly continues to educate
clients about the danger of skin cancer and provide
free skin cancer screenings on a regular basis.
Skin cancer remains one of the fastest-growing
cancers nationwide, with more than 3.5 million new
cases diagnosed every year—more than every other
type of cancer combined.

3.  In response, members of the AAD have come
together on the first Monday of each May to
kick off Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and
Prevention Month for more than 20 years.
Although most cases are entirely preventable
or treatable, an estimated 9,000 lives are lost
each year to melanoma and other skin
cancers—the equivalent of one life lost every
hour. An estimated 5 million Americans
continue to live with the disease, resulting in
approximately $8.1 billion in annual healthcare
costs. Below are a few basic measures backed
by the AAD to help prevent skin cancer:

4.  Perform skin self-exams monthly and discuss abnormalities
with a dermatologist.
Prevent sunburns by applying wide-spectrum sunscreen
every 2 hours and avoid tanning beds.
Wear broad-brimmed hats with wraparound sunglasses
and stay in the shade at peak sunlight hours.
