Mise-en-scene & Sound
By Dominic Patrick
Lighting
The scene begins very dark with the cake and candles acting as a beacon to the
viewer; the light in the dark is welcoming to the viewer. The scene then moves
into the hospital were the frames are filled with shadow and tinged green; this
is to give a muggy grimy feel to the viewer and hint to that something is wrong.
Sarah then wakes up from her dream and is being help by her friend; the
lighting in these frames is white and grey, this is to symbolize that everything is
back to normal (white) and that nothing strange will happen in the boring real
world (grey).
Location
The scene starts off with just the daughter and the cake in the
darkness; this is to imply that these frames aren’t in real life. The
scene transitions into Sarah’s nightmare which is in a dark and
green hospital; the hospital looks like this to imply that she is in a
strange place. The final part of the scene is in the proper hospital
setting to signify that everything is back to normal.
Props
The cake in the start of the scene the cake
represents the birthday wish of the girl that
won’t come true. The heart monitor
represents the death of Sarah's child and
husband.
Costume
The child’s costume at the begging of the scene is a plain white
dress; this is to symbolize the purity and innocence of the child.
Sarah’s costume is a hospital patients gown because she is in a
hospital. Sarah’s two friends are dressed differently to each other
to express their personalities. Juno is dressed in more slim clothing
to show her sporty personality, and Beth is dressed in wooly
clothing to express her soft personality.
Sound
The scene starts of with both diegetic and non-diegetic sound; as
the flames are blown out and the heart monitor beeps, there is a
eerie sound in the background. The non-diegetic sound then fades
away, leaving the diegetic sound of Sarah moving and breathing
whilst the heart monitor beeps and then flat lines. The non-
diegetic eerie sound then returns when Sarah enters the corridor;
accompanied by the diegetic sound of Sarah calling out for Jess.
When Sarah is running from the darkness the non-diegetic sound
pulses each time the darkness advances; this is to create the
impressing that the darkness is trying to close around Sarah. When
Sarah screams For jess the non-diegetic sound goes into a very
deep sound to represent the dispelling of the darkness and ,then
changes into a lighter and high pitch soundtrack to show that she
is safe with jess. Whilst the high pitched non-diegetic sound plays
Sarah cries whilst Jess shushes her and comforts her, this is
diegetic sound. The scene ends with the high pitched sound
changing into a deeper sinister sound to show that worse is to
come.
Lighting
The lighting is consistent throughout the scene. The lighting
is to create the illusion of them being in cave; as the scene
was not filmed in a cave, the lighting was used to make its
seem like it was. The lighting is also used to create a sinister
theme to the scene; as the darkness that almost consumed
Sarah in the hospital is surrounding the group now because
of the lights on the girls heads and the flares.
Location
This scene is not filmed in a cave. The
producers had to use shot angles and
lighting tricks to create the illusion of
them being in cave.
Props
The props in this scene are head lamps, flares
and caving gear. The head lamps and flares are
important props in this scene as they serve as
the groups only safety from the darkness where
the monsters lurk. The lighting props are also
used to help create the illusion of a cave.
Costume
In this scene all the girls are wearing caving gear; but their costumes reflect
their personalities. For example Juno is wearing less protective clothing than
Jess; this shows that Juno is a more confident caver and is experienced with
extreme sports as she doesn’t feel the need for as much protective gear,
however Jess is dressed for the occasion in proper gear, this shows that Jess is
not an experienced caver and will not let her ego get in the way of her safety.
Their costumes show that Juno is egoistic and outgoing whereas Jess is safe and
smart.
Sound
The scene begins with the diegetic sound of the girls
and water falling from above. As the girls finish
climbing up, a deep hollow echoey non-diegetic sound
begins to play along side the diegetic sound; this is to
create a sense of unsafety in the viewers mind. When
they spot the animal bones the sound gets higher and
louder; this is to signal the approach of the danger.
When the creature is spotted there is a diegetic
scream by one of the woman and the monster, along
side the non-diegetic sound getting deeper and louder
than it was before; this is to show that the danger has
reveled itself and that it is a threat. When the monster
has escaped the non-diegetic sound disappears and
there are the diegetic sounds of the girls shouting at
each other and a flare being lit.
