13. (Travel – time off) !== vacation
Wondering how to reconcile a trip to an island
paradise and work?
@atomrc
14. Here is my typical day:
• 6 am: Wake up to start work at 6:30 in the
apartment (hello dawn).
• 9 am: We go to town for breakfast.
• 9:30 am: Work from a place with WiFi.
• 12 pm: We're getting seriously hungry.
• 1 pm: Time to shift the workplace.
• 2 pm: Time for a little swim/ dive/ hike or walk.
• 6 pm: Back to work, free from mosquitoes
@atomrc
15. Except that…
I did that within barely 3 days in the whole 3
weeks!
@atomrc
16. In the real world
• 6 am: wake up✓
• 9 am: work| breakfast | walk | diving |
swimming
• 10 am: work| walk | diving | swimming
• 11 am: work| walk | diving | swimming

19. The Split-Shift Worker’s Guide
• Overcome any guilt
• Do away with unnecessary work phases;
• Do not do away with a productive work phase.
@atomrc
20. The greatest advantage of
Hackerbeach:
The guys are hard workers!
... And they don't take any more vacation than
you.

@atomrc
23. Synch with the “freezedbutt”
team
Problems encountered:
• the obstructing situations
• getting people to understand the written
word.
• lack of context | oral vs chat discussion.
@atomrc
24. Summary
The + :
• full of beautiful encounters
• have the feeling of being on vacation while still
working
• avoid routine
The - :
• not easy to synch with the team
