Editor's Notes
Due to recent escapes and assaults on staff and inmates the new Warden must come up with ideas to improve the prison life. To accomplish this the warden must meet with both staff and inmates to get a whole picture of the situation at hand. This is a closed security prison and issues must be addressed.
12,000 inmates are released back into society. Most inmates have not had a proper education many quitting before high school. By prisons implementing and encouraging all inmates as well as staff to work together, they will be more successful. These programs are based on their history, and their attendance. If the inmates are proving themselves they can move up the latter. This means when a teacher leaves, one of the inmates could fill that position. (Brown, B., 2008)They can become mediators, teachers, and mentors, to help other coming into the system to find ways to succeed and to keep out of trouble. By receiving their GED they feel they have accomplished something. Programs that include behavioral therapy, educational, writing etc. they learn they are improving their lives.
Programs for both inmates and staff. Inmates to learn a trade, in the event they may be released. They will have skills to find a new job. They will need to learn how to cope with their previous issues and anger management. Staff need programs to train them how to cope with situations and how to reacts.
Additionally officers must have the tools, such as handcuffs, carry-on-person chemical agents, and protective vests to defend and protect them self from violent attacks. For a correctional officer to understand what material can be fashioned into a weapon, they must receive adequate training to recognize how offenders fashion weapons (Biermann, 2007). Additionally, written policies, procedures, and practice must be in place for correctional officers to control contraband both within the institution and from coming into the prison (Biermann, 2007).
