Finding new audiences
and revenue streams
2. • Direct revenue
Embrace new platforms, new formats and new funding models
(paid sponsorship, subscriptions, commercial applications)
• Partnerships
Broadcasters, Horizon 20/20, Local, Regional and National
Government, Universities, charities and NGO’s
• Grants and startup programmes
Google DNI, Knight Foundation, Amazon…
• Investors and incubators
Have a business plan that shows ROI and be able to demonstrate
the commercial viability of your idea
Ways to fund your work
3. • Explore new formats and new revenue models
• Explore B2B and B2C funding options
• Measure which platforms generate the most engagement
and revenue potential
Consider traffic from Facebook, Twitter, AMP, YouTube,
podcasting, your own website, a paid subscription service…
• Map out the experience on different platforms
The web, mobile, the desktop, on a tablet, on social media,
with wearable tech, with a smart home device, on a smart TV
Explore & test revenue models
4. • Broadcasters and media orgs
Explore opportunities with broadcasters (including state funded
broadcasters like the BBC & VOA) and large commercial media orgs
• Horizon 2020
Major project leaders look for SMEs to work with as it’s a requirement in
projects they have funding for
• Local, Regional and National Government
Government departments can have their own quotas for engaging with
small businesses
• Universities and educational foundations
• Charities, Non-Profit Groups and Non-Governmental Organisations
Partnerships
5. • Grants from companies and foundations
Google Digital News Initiative, Knight Foundation…
• Funds from development agencies
U.S. Agency for International Development, BBC Media
Action, Department for International Development…
• Startup programmes
Commercial incentives to use or create things in the
form of funding to develop use services from
companies like Amazon
Grants and programmes
6. • Incubators can help… for a price
Start up incubators can provide a small cash boost and help you
get stated but often for a not insignificant percentage of your
company
• Investors expect a return
You need to be able to show how you can deliver an attractive RoI
and that you have tested your idea (through a prototype or market
research)
• Startups within larger companies
If your idea isn’t going to deliver the sort of huge returns VCs are
looking for, are there organisations who might disproportionately
benefit from your work and be willing to fund it?
Investors and incubators
