2. n Welcome to Pendro Communications
• Currently there are few methods of communicating to the
Congolese Community’s in the UK and Europe.
• The country prior to 1960 was under Belgian Colony
• Many of the family unity and values that are held in the DRC
remain in the UK, the Congolese family is at the heart of the
community. Women are primarily responsible for caring for
the family and maintaining the household, whereas men in
the DRC are responsible for providing for the family with
goods and services such as household products, clothes,
transportation etc and are regarded as the principle earners
and usually manage the household finances.
• However in the UK where women have direct access to
money either from an income or state support such as child
benefit or family tax credits, monetary responsibilities tend to
be shared, however, this shift in power can cause problems
and tension at home and as a result Congolese marriages in
the UK are much more likely to dissolve with 4 out of 10
marriages ending up in divorce.
• Unlike the English, Congolese have little concept of privacy,
they are used to sharing their homes with friends and
relatives and people don’t think twice about showing up at a
friends unannounced and inviting themselves to stay, they
are also very social and love to gossip and tell stories to one
another.
• The main religious groups are Roman Catholic (50%),
Protestant (20%) Kimbanguist (10%) and Muslim (10%).
Church plays a large part in Congolese culture here in the
UK and church leaders have an elevated status within the
community, and is often one of the only influences they
receive outside of the home.
• Education and language can be key barriers in helping
Congolese people to obtain employment in the UK. Also
lack of resources in education and employment in the DRC
mean that most Congolese will need to retrain in order to
gain employment in the UK. Research has shown that
education and employment are key factors in helping the
integration process.
• Healthcare in the DRC has to be paid for and as a result
Congolese out of habit often try and seek help from within
their community rather than seeking professional medical
advice. Also the language barrier can prove to be a problem
to people obtaining advice, although there are some
charities set up to communicate to the Congolese audience
there are few effective Congolese mediums for these
charity’s to communicate their message effectively.
• Congolese people have a limited understanding and
awareness of sexual health problems, and people consider
sexual relations to be a private matter and any such sexual
related problems to be taboo. For women especially, sex
before marriage is considered a sin and women therefore are
often very naïve especially compared to western women in
regards to sexual health, however, it is excepted that men
will have sex before marriage and it is not unusual for
Congolese men to have other sexual partners whilst married,
leaving Congolese women vulnerable to contracting sexually
transmitted diseases.

• Pendro is the leading Congolese Magazine in the UK and
Europe and covers a variety of interests that are of interest to it’s
readers.
• Unlike any other Congolese publication Pendro magazine has a
section that is written in Lingala – Congolese first language,
helping to reach an even larger population of the Congolese
community.
• Pendro is also the only publication that engages it’s readers with
comic strips. Comics are a tried and tested way of
communicating difficult messages with African readers. Pendro’s
comic strips are illustrated by Congolese most respected
illustrator Kash Thembo who has a strong following throughout
the World. The strips help to cover sensitive topics such as
sexual health, domestic violence and divorce to name a few, but
it is written in such a way that raises sensitive issues without
being patronising. The stories are created to raise topics into
peoples everyday lives, opening up taboo subjects
• Pendro Magazine’s key objective is to aid integration into the
local community by educating and informing the Congolese
community of the services available to them.
• Pendro is a trusted media brand that acts as a platform for
communicating to an audience that has no other way of
