2. GMO
• According to the World Health
Organization (WHO), GMOs,
i.e., genetically modified
organisms can be defined as
organisms (i.e., plants, animals
or microorganisms) in which the
genetic material (DNA) has
been altered in a way that does
not occur naturally by mating
and/or natural recombination.
12. Risks
• Possibility of being toxic.
• Possibility of causing ana
allergic reaction.
• Could harm the
environment by impacting
insects, birds, mammals,
water, etc.
• The possibility of unknown
health concerns for
humans
• Possible destruction of
natural ecosystems
• Food companies conduct
their own tests not the FDA
13. Benefits
• Resistance to certain
disease and insects
• A strong tolerance to
certain weather conditions.
• Opportunity to increase the
nutritional value of certain
foods.
• More production of crops
• More food to feed the
hungry and decrease
hunger/salvation
• Certain foods last longer
than normal.
• Increased revenue for
farmers internationally.
14. Conclusion
• GMO’s present both
positive and negative aspects
to society as a whole
• They are a topic of much
deliberation and tension.
• Ultimately, GMOs are still a
relatively premature
technology and in the
development process.
Only time will reveal their
ultimate effect on humans.
