Total Observed Activities and Hours
Dennis effectively used his internship as an opportunity to examine the demands of a career in local law enforcement. He clearly
approached the internship with an open mind and has used this opportunity to further solidify his decision to pursue a career as
a police officer. The breakdown of his activities and hours are listed below:

Overall Performance
Dennis’ level of involvement and commitment to the internship program and NPD was commendable. He is an individual with
diverse experience and displayed a level of ability that would allow him to succeed in modern municipal policing. Throughout the
internship, Dennis progressed significantly in each of the assessed performance criteria:
Firearms
Dennis participated in regular weapons training
throughout his internship. During his 86.5 hours of
firearms and use of force related training, Dennis was
engaged and receptive to feedback. Dennis showed a
very high aptitude in firearms and marksmanship. He
scored a 78% (good rating) on the State of Illinois Pistol
Qualification and 100% on the NPD Shotgun
Qualification. He also participated in intensive patrol rifle
training and assisted the NPD Professional Development
and Training Section in developing an advanced combat
pistol assessment.
Physical Fitness
Dennis’ level of physical fitness and athleticism was obvious and exemplary. From the onset, he easily exceeded the state POWER
fitness test standards for all serving male police officers. Dennis’ commitment to physical fitness was automatic his greatest
improvements came in his flexibility. Through his 40 hours of physical training, he regularly utilized the department’s fitness
center to further improve his fitness levels. On a monthly basis, he participated in the POWER fitness test to better assess his
level of physical fitness;
Written Test
For the NPD Spring 2016 Internship, Dennis achieved a passing score on the mock written police test. The 150 question test
covered 8 different law enforcement focused topics.

Initiative, Adaptability, Enthusiasm for the Experience
Dennis understood his position within the agency but always displayed confidence and intense desire to learn. Despite long days
of training, he was always willing to assist with any assignment.
Dennis regularly volunteered to be a role-player during scenario based training. During mock scenarios that recreated very
stressful conditions, he was required to interact with the Naperville Police Department’s Special Response Team and a regional
Weapons of Mass Destruction SWAT Team. The training was also always conducted in the presence of many other officers,
supervisors and observers. As a role player, Dennis willingly interacted with groups of highly trained officers. His actions helped
officers to train for tense, rapidly evolving, non-deadly force encounters. Despite the stress of the situation, Dennis was always
safe and stayed on-task in order to add to the realism and success of the training. Based upon his dedication to these assignments,
Dennis truly assisted law enforcement at the highest levels.
Dennis quickly understood and embraced the aforementioned training initiatives conducted by NPD. She was proactive and
instrumental in the logistics associated with these complex training blocks. Over time, Dennis was also able to provide
constructive feedback regarding the performance of the officers attending the classes. This greatly assisted the instructors with
class and student critiques, as well as continued training needs.
During his 27 hours of defensive tactics training, Dennis was successfully tested in the following
less-lethal and control platforms:
 Less Lethal Shotgun and Beanbag munitions
 ASP expandable baton
 Taser
 Pepper Spray (direct exposure in being sprayed during the training of newly sworn police
officers)
 Handcuffing and searching arrestees
 Various self-defense and control tactics (Krav Maga techniques)
Along with the rest of the NPD Interns and members of the NPD
Special Response Team, Dennis voluntarily agreed to be exposed
to less-lethal, crowd control chemical munitions during the
team’s annual certification.
On a day outside of the standard internship schedule,
Dennis also represented NPD during the Law
Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run.

Teamwork, Contribution to Team and Interpersonal Skills
Dennis was a reliable and consistent team player. Based upon his sense of humor, approachable and humble nature, Dennis was
awarded the highest amount of points by his contemporaries and exceeded the group average in all but one category. The 14
evaluated characteristics afforded individual interns a total of 70 points in each area.
Effective Communication
Skills, Judgement and
Decision Making
Throughout the internship, Dennis
displayed a notable commitment
to being open and honest. He
would regularly seek feedback
from many sources. Dennis was
not afraid to share the unique
experiences that shaped his life,
which displayed a level of integrity
and maturity beyond her years. His
ability to be both direct and candid
was evident throughout the
internship. Dennis would also
often provide comedic relief and
this, no doubt, allowed the group
to relax and bond both
professionally and socially. He is
also fluent in 3 different languages (English, native to Polish and Spanish). This plus Dennis’ openness are traits that will serve him
well in modern law enforcement and life.
Organizational Skills, Professionalism, Handling Tasks & Responsibilities and Problem Solving
Additional tasks completed by Dennis during the internship:
 Created a training video involving less-lethal tactics to be shown to at the Citizens Police Academy
 Conducting reference checks for future interns (via numerous phone conversations)
 Compiling the above information in the form of a written report
During the selection process for the next group of interns, Dennis also participated facility tours with his fellow interns and
answered questions for the internship applicants. Furthermore, he provided valuable feedback to his supervisors regarding some
of his potential replacements in the program.
Supervisors Synopsis of Performance
In addition to the previous statistics and statements, we feel that of the nine interns attending the NPD Spring 2016 session,
Dennis would be considered one of our most consistent performers. As for a future in law enforcement, Dennis displayed many
of the traits required to be an effective police officer. Based upon the successful completion of the hiring process, he would be
an asset to any law enforcement agency and hopefully NPD. As of 7/29/2016, Dennis Walega has met the established criteria and
is eligible for the Internship Preference Points associated with the Naperville Police Officer Testing Process (certificate attached).
