Stefan Sagmeister, born in Austria and
graduate from the University of Applied
Arts in Vienna; he is consider as a concep-
tual graphic designer of the time, charac-
terized for his unharmonious visual work.
Lou Reed Poster, Sagmeister read Lou’s
lyrics for Trade In, found a very personal
song about his need to change. He used
Lou’s lyrics written on the singer’s face.
AIGA Detroit Poster, with the intention to
visualize the pain that seems to accompany
most design projects it was asked to type
into Sagmeister’s skin.
David Byrne And Bryan Eno “Everything
that happens will Happen Today” Packag-
ing, it is an exuberant and positive music
that reveals after several listenings a darker
edge. This was the influence for an idyllic
packaging design. The suburban house
sets the stage for many different disturb-
ing scenes alluding to a deeper story which
ultimately goes untold.
Casa da Musica. Branding. Rem Koolhaas,
architect, designed the center in the harbor
town of Porto in Portugal. The identity was
inspired based on his building. Turn down to
be unique and modern by transforming itself
like a chameleon from application to applica-
tion, reflecting the many different kinds of
music performed in one house.
Standard Chartered. Film Commercial. This 60
second advert for the conservative (and socially
conscious) Standard Chartered takes its typo-
graphic approach throughout Asia, Africa and
the Middle East.
Things I have learned in my life so far. Book. In
this presentation Sagmeister throws his diary,
a lot of design, and art together with a pinch
of psychology and a dash of happiness. This
book was published in Spring 2008 by Abrams
featuring 15 different covers and 256 pages.
The Happy Show. Installation Exhibition. Offers
visitors the experience of walking into Stefan
Sagmeister’s mind as he attempts to increase
his happiness via mediation, cognitive therapy,
and mood-altering pharmaceuticals. Located at
the Institute of Contemporary Art’s (ICA).
