Quantitative:
Sample sets were large enough to ensure statistically valid results with low margin of error (typically 1000+ respondents)
Qualitative:
Multiple focus groups and in-depth phone surveys
Usually conducted by a third party to ensure impartiality
Sufficient breadth to ensure inclusion of multiple industry verticals, geographical areas, business life stages, and customer segments
Deluxe has a sizeable portfolio of medium and large corporate business customers but the results shown today are the work done primarily with owners and decision makers from small businesses with less than 50 employees
Research included existing Deluxe customers, lapsed Deluxe customers and non-customers
All these lapsed customers were allowed multiple responses
In 2013, 76% of the time Lapsed (former) Laser Check Customers said that they were using fewer checks because they changed some payments to alternate payment methods. This was not a statistically relevant response in previous years—2008 and 2010
Conclusion: Alternate payment methods are indeed being used and are resulting in fewer checks being written
The vast majority of lapsed customers may have tried alternative payment methods, but they are still writing checks.
All respondents were again allowed multiple responses.
All segments have switched

Recent and Long-Term Payment Trends in the United States: 2003-2012
Why do Deluxe’s qualitative research results show that SBs are trying alternate payment methods in substantial numbers, but the Federal Reserve Payments study shows that the volume of checks written by businesses is not decreasing at an equivalent rate?
We believe the answer lies in the qualitative results...
We believe alternative payment methods should be evaluated for potential adoption by Small Businesses using the following lens. The fewer criteria that a solution meets the less likely it is to be valuable to a SB.
Remittance data is often obtained from accounting software
Hundreds of accounting software packages in use by SBs – solution must be software agnostic
SBs have often made a significant investment of time and energy setting up accounting software within their business – change is not easy
Not all SBs use accounting software so a solution must accommodate both sophisticated and non-sophisticated SB AP processes
SBs frequently outsource AP fulfillment to accountants but want to retain control
Time spent resolving payment acceptance issues is a huge opportunity cost to business
Payment acceptance issues can have a negative impact on SBs reputation
Unproven acceptance = decreased confidence & decreased adoption likelihood
Unexpected fees can equate to perceived acceptance issues
Payment deadlines are frequent and sometimes unexpected
SBs spend significant sums to ensure speedy payment
Desired ability to hold funds and control release
Suppliers and vendors often require immediate payment to release goods or provide services
Delays in payments result in tremendous frustration for both SBs and payment recipients
Feel that solutions without this capability were designed as consumer applications and forced onto businesses
Extra payment reconcilement work is a luxury small businesses do not want to fund
Timely reconcilement avoids future work
Good remittance data can help avoid misunderstandings and difficulties with key suppliers, partners and vendors
Forces them into the uncomfortable role of a payment educator
Do not want to spend time helping their payees sign up for a solution
Required membership/sign up of payees limits payment acceptance
Sign up/membership process can result in hampering payment immediacy
Fees limit payment acceptance
Fees are often charged back to small business
Fees often result in limitations on when payment method can be used
Payee fees that are complicated and difficult to foresee can be considered to be predatory and negatively reflects on the reputation of a small business
SBs are often making payments to both consumers and other businesses and need a payment method that can be used for both
Empathize with payee about not wanting to provide sensitive data
They often are not able to force payee to provide the data
Worry about security risk of obtaining sensitive payee data
Worry about security risk of storing sensitive payee data
SBs do not want to learn the intricacies of the U.S. payment system infrastructure
SBs do not want to act as facilitator between payees and financial institutions
Do not want to spend time on payment method implementation
Want a payment method that is intuitive, easy to understand, learn and use
Simple implementation needs to be true for both payor and payee
SBs do not want to spend time worrying about their or their payees sensitive data but they do worry about it
SBs respond well to tangible evidence of payment security
SBs expect payment facilitator to manage payment security
Security is considered table stakes for any payment method being considered
Bewildered by vast array of payment methods, providers and potential impacts to their business
Repeatedly stated that they want trusted brands to bring forward the best solution for them
Extremely cautious about unknown brands and companies due to potential fraud risk
Worried that time spent on implementing a solution will be wasted when the solution no longer exists or is overtaken by the next payment fad
Count down from 10 to 1
