JOBS FOR VIRGINIA GRADUATES
2017-2018 Summer/Fall
This Edition is Dedicated to Carmen Urso!
Thank You for Your Dedication and Service to JVG!
“Today is my last day as an employee of Fairfax County Schools (52 years
to be exact). I spent 18 years of it with JVG and it was a great experience.
We helped a lot of young ladies in Project Opportunity AND JVG does
make a difference. I met a lot of very nice people along the way and I am a
better person for it today. I will miss working in this program and I want to
wish you all the best of luck in coming years. My replacement, Celeste
LaCour-Williams, has a lot of experience in career education and I am
pleased that she will continue to make Bryant a signature school of JVG.
Thanks Barry for putting up with me. Thanks for all your hard work and ef-
fort that you put into making JVG what it is. I will miss you all. My regards
to the gang,” Carmen.
Carmen A. Urso was born and reared in Clarksburg, WV. Upon gradua-
tion from high school in 1950, Carmen was drafted for military service
and joined the United States Navy and was sworn in on November 1,
1950. After 4 years of service, Carmen worked in the auto industry in
Detroit and decided to put his GI Bill to use. After earning his BA de-
gree, Carmen secured a social studies teaching position in 1964 with
Fairfax County Schools while working on a MA degree in Guidance and
Counseling. Carmen retired in 1986 and continued to work in the Adult
Education Division after retirement. In 1987, it was decided that the old
Groveton HS facility would be transformed into the Bryant Adult Center. It was there that Carmen would spend the
next 31 years working in various programs, mainly the Project Opportunity Program (Teen Mothers), which served
as the class for Jobs for Virginia Graduates.
The program proved to be a successful one since grant funds
were always awarded each year. Carmen teamed with our be-
loved Liz Link. Carmen’s career spans 52 years in Fairfax
County Schools and includes being a student counselor at Ft.
Hunt HS, Program Director (Landmark Career Academy),
Adult Ed counselor (Edison Adult Center), night school coun-
selor and Project Opportunity counselor (Bryant High School),
Assistant Principal of summer school and Career Specialist for
Jobs for Virginia Graduates. Carmen is married and has 2
daughters and 3 grandchildren.
Carmen has served as a JVG Specialist for 18 years at Bryant High
School in Fairfax County.
Congratulations on your “final retirement”!
"The JVG Specialists are the backbone of
our program and Carmen is an outstand-
ing example of a Specialist who cares
deeply for his students. It was an honor to
work with him at Bryant for the last 20
years."

JVG Hosts Student Le
JVG hosted its annual Student Leadership Conferences in Roanoke on October 11th
at the Hotel Roanoke and Con-
ference Center and on October 13th
at the Omni Richmond Hotel. Over 125 students from 25 JVG programs across
the Commonwealth attended the events. The purpose of the event is to emphasize to our JVG students that even
though they have been labeled “at-risk”, they can become leaders. Job Specialists, guests, and Board members were
also in attendance. A student President and Vice-President were elected from each region (eastern Virginia and
western Virginia). JVG will send the officers and their chaperones to an overnight in Richmond to visit the Capitol
and spend a day at the General Assembly.
The agenda for the day included registration, an ice-breaker activity, a team building activity (building the tallest
balloon tower), JVG State Student Officer Speeches & State Officers Election, a Keynote Speaker, and lunch with
JVG Board Members and guests. We want our JVG students to leave
the conference knowing we (the Specialists, Board Members, and
business representatives) are there to assist and to encourage them as
they seek their career and higher education goals. It is our desire that
they leave with confidence and a positive outlook. For many of our
students this is the first experience they have had outside their
hometown environments.
Katharine Claytor, Vice President of Human Resources, Delta Den-
tal, and member of the JVG Board of Directors spoke to our students
in Roanoke. Ms. Claytor encouraged the students to stop and take a
“Career Selfie”. She advised five lessons in leadership: relationships
matter, good communication is essential, one does not need a fancy
title to make a difference, learn from difficult times, and go after ex-
periences. Jackson Leonard from Carroll County was elected west-
Katharine Claytor with newly elected western Virginia
Co-Presidents: Isaiah Paredes (Carroll County) and
Mary Muindi (Danville).
Jobs for Virginia Graduates State Officers from Northhampton High School Visit the Capitol. The JVG student
officers and their JVG Specialist traveled to Richmond on Wednesday, February 8, for dinner with Barry and Tem-
ple Glenn at the Tobacco Company and an overnight stay at the Richmond Omni. On Thursday morning the guests
were hosted by JVG Chair, The Honorable Eileen Filler-Corn, and JVG President & CEO, Barry Glenn, for a visit
and tour of the Virginia General Assembly and Capitol.
JVG State student officers Johnny Sample (President) and Quazhanik
Upshur (Vice-President) along with their Specialist, Sandra Chandler had
the opportunity to visit with Virginia Lt. Governor, Ralph S. Northam
(who grew up on the Eastern Shore where Northampton High School is
located) and Representative Robert S. Bloxom, Jr., 100th District, which
includes the students’ Northampton County. The Honorable Eileen Filler-
Corn, Virginia House of Delegates in the 41st District, introduced the
JVG students, JVG Specialist, and Barry Glenn who were sitting in the
Gallery, from the floor of the Virginia House of Delegates.
It was an honor to be introduced from the floor

AT&T Helps Jobs for Virginia
Rockville, VA (March 16, 2017) - Jobs for Virginia Graduates (JVG) received a $10,000 contribution
from AT&T to support Jobs for Virginia Student Leadership Conferences that provide opportunities for
students to learn critical job-related skills and to network with potential employers.
“The AT&T funding will allow JVG to reach approximately 500 students in the two restructured Student
Leadership Conferences next fall. I greatly appreciate the role AT&T plays with its support of Jobs for
Virginia Graduates. The company has demonstrated its commitment to the needs of our at-risk students in
preparing them to enter the workforce,” said Barry Glenn, president and CEO of JVG.
“Removing barriers to academic success and career growth is a core prin-
ciple driving our community investments,” said Vince Apruzzese, region-
al vice president for AT&T in Virginia. “We want to help provide Virgin-
ia’s young people with opportunities for growth that will serve us well
now and into the future. Supporting JVG is one way to do that.”
JVG is a statewide program for at-risk youth with the mission to identify
high school students who face barriers to education, and to guide each
one on to a successful path toward continued education, a meaningful
career, and productive adulthood. Utilizing the Jobs for America’s Grad-
uates (JAG) Model Programs, JVG delivers a unique set of services in-
cluding 12 months of post-graduation follow-up services. Through the
Senior and Multi-Year Programs, JVG facilitates learning, skill development and community involvement.

Petersburg High School Saving Lives!
Petersburg Jobs for Virginia Graduates partnered with Virginia Blood Services to hosts its annual blood
drives. Virginia Blood Services is a not for profit blood service that has been serving Virginians since
1974. VBS supports patients throughout Virginia. VBS gave out over $113,000 last school year in High
School Scholarship funds to Virginia High Schools! They are proud to have Petersburg High School as a
part of the High School Blood Program and a partner in saving lives.
Due to the dedication and teamwork of the students enrolled in JVG; 79 students, faculty, staff, parents and
community members participated in the blood drives at Petersburg High this year. We collected 35 donations
which can help save up to 105 lives!
The Jobs for Virginia Graduates job specialist, Mrs. Rebecca Mullin, coaches students to help make the
blood drives a success. The Virginia Blood Services High School Scholarship Program Award for Peters-
burg High School is $ 1250 total! This year the scholarship was shared by ten Jobs for Virginia Graduates
students who all donated blood.
In addition, this years blood drive committee pulled in another lifesaving organization; Be The Match. Be
The Match is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program ® (NMDP), which manages the largest and
most diverse marrow registry in the world. Be The Match was able to successfully register 20 students, facul-
ty, staff, parents and community members to become potential bone marrow donors. Petersburg High School
JVG students are focused on servant leadership and saving lives across the nation! Great Job!

The Importance of Etiquette
By Sharon Owens, JVG Specialist—Russell County Career & Technology Center
Seniors from the JVG program at the Russell County Career and Technology Center recently attended a business etiquette
luncheon at the Virginian Golf Club in Bristol, Virginia. The students were challenged outside of their comfort zones in a
social setting with area business leaders, school administrators and peers. Dressed in business attire, the event began with
a “mocktail hour” which enabled students to practice the skill of creating a positive first impression while gaining self
confidence. “ I liked the food. It was fun getting dressed up and talking with all the adults. I felt like I was in high society
for the day. ” (Cody Jordan)
The students were served a three course meal, consisting of a farm-to-table salad, 4 oz. Flank Steak, Chicken Cordon
Bleu, Parmesan Whipped Potatoes, Green Beans and Flourless Chocolate Torte for dessert. Students networked with
business leaders and peers at their tables while enjoying the meal. Also during lunch, The Virginian Golf Clubs Director
of Club Events Heather Garrison, Chef Travis, and Golf Course Superintendent Chuck James spoke about what their jobs
entailed and the paths that lead to their current positions. “ It was nice. I really enjoyed talking with Mr. (Adam) Wilson.
He was fun.” (Anthony Lester)
In today’s fiercely competitive job market and economy, graduates need every skill they can acquire to get an edge on the
competition. Good manners aren’t about “putting on airs.” They are about making people feel at ease—at the table, in
business meetings, and at social events. The impression you make on someone determines your ability to succeed as
much as your on-the-job abilities and knowledge.
“Just wanted to say KUDOS on a JOB WELL DONE yesterday! What those students learned in a few hours, as they ap-
plied everything they learned this year, they’ll carry with them for a lifetime. I loved how they were challenged out of
their comfort zones and to see them rise to the occasion. I don’t doubt they’ll each succeed in life. “ (Mary Smith,DARS)
RCCTC would like to thank Cleco Corporation, Adam Wilson Auctioneers, Ltd., Strongwell Corporation, Department for
Aging & Rehabilitative Services, Kissito Healthcare, Friends of Russell County Virginia Animal Shelter, Russell County
Board of Supervisors, The Southwest Virginia Alliance for Manufacturing, Inc. and Russell County School Administra-
tors for your attendance and your continued support. We want to extend a very special Thank You to The Virginian Golf
Club for hosting this event.
Virginia Randolph has a Great Year!
Students at the Academy at Virginia Randolph had a busy school year! JVG students started out by electing
career association officers and attending the State Leadership Conference in Richmond. In November, stu-
dents started planning and implementing
their community service project. Students
collected items for Samaritan’s Purse—
Operation Shoebox in which they had to
fill a shoebox with various items to be
sent to underprivileged children in other
countries. Students collected enough to
fill 20 boxes! They then travelled to Mt.
Vernon Baptist Church to help sort, pack and load all of the boxes! JVG students also had the opportunity to
hear numerous guest speakers, participate in a college and career fair, and go on several field trips including
one to Busch Gardens! Overall, they had a great year!

Award Winning JVG Student!
James Bouie, JVG student from Randolph-Henry High School in Charlotte County, has celebrated an
award-winning senior year. "He is an amazingly, talented artist and a wonderful young man. It has been
such a joy having him as a JVG student and watching his success in the art world! He gave me an awesome
sketch of Jimmi Hendrix as a gift for my classroom!” says RHHS JVG specialist Rhonda Benn. James'
drawing of Nelson Mandela was chosen earlier in May by the Virginia School Board Association to repre-
sent Region 8 and hang in the State Superintendent of Public Instruction in Richmond (see picture below).
His sketches of Muhammad Ali and Tupac have both been displayed at Longwood University and the
Longwood Center for Visual Arts. "I keep pushing a career with Disney", chuckles Mrs. Benn. James
won't rule it out but plans to begin college this fall as an art major.
Craig County Students Make College Visits a Priority
By Lauren Burgess, JVG Specialist
Since my JVG group were all seniors this year, we toured colleges in the area and enjoyed their dining halls
to help this group make their final decisions. We went to Virginia Tech, Radford, and Virginia Western.
The students were able to talk to admissions departments, actual college students, and the financial aid
counselors. They were also able to tour specific departments, see dorm rooms, and eat pretty amazing
lunches. Due to these visits, we had at least ten students ask for help applying to colleges when they had
initially thought they would not fit in at college, and 5 change their mind from a 2 year to a 4 year. I really
hope we can keep these visits up and help students see or just hear about opportunities they might not have
considered before.

JVG Program Plants the Seeds for Success
The inaugural Jobs for Virginia Graduates program at New HOPE Academy proved to be a huge success. In all, 36
students enrolled in the curriculum and learned techniques that will serve them not only as they enter the work force
for the first time, but into their respective careers after graduation.
The learning process goes well beyond the traditional classroom. New HOPE students received invaluable instruc-
tion from successful entrepreneurs in the community through assemblies, mentoring programs and leadership con-
ferences. As part of the curriculum, NHA students received training in resume-building, cover letter writing, inter-
viewing techniques and the importance of soft skills (i.e., making eye-contact, firm handshake, and good communi-
cation). We strive to teach our students how to dress for the job they want after graduation, and not necessarily for
the one in which they are applying.
This preparation paid off in an open-interview job fair conducted by the Hopewell-area Hardee’s restaurants in
April. All seven of those who attended the session came away with job offers. Moreover, Hardee’s management
commented that NHA students were the best-prepared of the schools that attended the event.
The New HOPE Academy Jobs for Virginia Graduates program initiated a weekly Dress for Success Day during the
2016-17 school year. Each Wednesday, JVG students came to school looking like they were ready for a day at the
office than a day in the classroom. The first Dress for Success day gave students the opportunity to stand out among
their peers and show them proper workplace attire. Wednesdays were also opportunities for the students to meet
with area business leaders and mentors through assemblies and one-on-one contact. New HOPE students had the
opportunity to meet with 104.7 FM “The Beat” announcer Cavell Phillips and learned what it takes to become a suc-
cess in electronic media. Jobs for Virginia Graduates CEO Barry Glenn spoke to NHA students about the im-
portance of being prepared when seeking employment.
Charlottesville, JVG Specialist Deb Tewksbury
At Charlottesville High School, marketing students had a busy spring. Quarter 3
was focused on entrepreneurship, with a culminating event at the Tom Tom Found-
ers Festival on April 13, 2017. Students created a business idea and presented it to
local business leaders. In the photo, Christian V. presents his concept to local lead-
er from the Chamber of Commerce, Frank Squillace. Students from around the re-
gion presented their ideas before a panel of judges at the Tom Tom Youth Sum-
mit. It was great to learn from other students' presentations, as well as hearing from
successful, young entrepreneurs in their keynote speeches.
In April, we had a visit with Sgt. Bland, from the US Army. He did mock
interviews with students and other activities. In the photo, Kamran A. is
"interviewing" for a job as a doctor. The students really enjoyed his advice
and enthusiasm.
CHS specialist, Deb Tewksbury, is very thankful for her current stu-
dents. Our 2017 seniors are about to graduate in June, and they are prepared
for success!

What’s Happening Around the State
Danville, George Washington High School, JVG Specialist Kenyatta Thomas
Here are the JVG students of George Washington High School serving as "Buddies" during the Special Olympic
held here on campus. Each student was paired with a special needs participant in order to help them compete in
events. Our students and their partners won a total of six 1st place ribbons!
It is with great sadness to inform you of the passing of Tion
Burton. Burton was a recent graduate of George Washing-
ton High School in Danville, VA. He served as Treasurer
for the JVG Career Association. Tion is pictured here with
his Special Olympics “Buddy” during a JVG community
service project. His service was held Saturday, June 3, at
Bibleway Cathedral. Our thoughts and prayers are with his
family and the Danville Community.
Chesterfield Alternative Education (JVG Specialist Beth Connor) students and staff had the opportunity to tour the
recently renovated train shed behind Main Street Station in Shockoe Bottom, Richmond VA . The two year 48 mil-
lion dollar project was done by Taylor-Parrish construction. Jim Benn, the project manager spoke at length with our
students regarding the many occupations that were involved in the large renovation of this building that was origi-
nally built in 1901. Students were able to ask Mr. Benn questions relating to their career interests in the construction
field. Afterward the students donned hard hats and were able to get a very detailed tour of the shed . The shed is
encased in glass and can host 2000 people for events. It will also be the home of Richmond tourism and other re-
tailers. Our students were in awe of this amazing project. They left very excited about pursuing careers in archi-
tecture and construction. The morning ended with pizza at Bottom Ups Pizza. It was a great day and a big thank
you to Mr. Benn whose dedication and enthusiasm was very motivating to our students. (Jim Benn is the husband of
our Charlotte County JVG Specialist, Rhonda Benn.)
Manchester High School, Chesterfield, JVG Specialist Kristin Breslin
This year, our JVG students adopted a family as our "Angel Family" for the holidays. The students donated cash as
well as gifts for a family of 3 boys. We were able to provide this needy family with clothing, video games, elec-
tronics, grocery store gift cards, and restaurant gift cards. The generosity displayed by the JVG students was inspir-
ing.

In September we had a great kick-off and all students were given a T-Shirt. We talked about JVG and its 20 year run
and how they could benefit from their participation as others have in the past. Students were shown a Teen Vid-
eo concerning Relationships which was well received. During the winter, students received gifts from New Hope
Church which also gave a Santa’s Workshop teaching students how to wrap gifts. In March, JVG students went to
Fairfax Hospital for a Parenting Workshop with emphasis on Teen Parenting, Positive Discipline and Healthy Bod-
ies. In March, Northern Virginia Community College gave a workshop in the Dual Generational Partnership Pro-
gram. (Students can earn college credit while in high school. During Easter, Children of JVG Teen Moms received
Easter Baskets. In May, a Mother’s Day event with former graduates was planned. In June, a farewell gathering event
will be provided for our graduates. Mr. Carmen A. Urso, Career Specialist since 1998 will retire at end of year.

JVG Connection September 2017

  • 1. JVG JOBS FOR VIRGINIA GRADUATES 2017-2018 Summer/Fall This Edition is Dedicated to Carmen Urso! Thank You for Your Dedication and Service to JVG! “Today is my last day as an employee of Fairfax County Schools (52 years to be exact). I spent 18 years of it with JVG and it was a great experience. We helped a lot of young ladies in Project Opportunity AND JVG does make a difference. I met a lot of very nice people along the way and I am a better person for it today. I will miss working in this program and I want to wish you all the best of luck in coming years. My replacement, Celeste LaCour-Williams, has a lot of experience in career education and I am pleased that she will continue to make Bryant a signature school of JVG. Thanks Barry for putting up with me. Thanks for all your hard work and ef- fort that you put into making JVG what it is. I will miss you all. My regards to the gang,” Carmen. Carmen A. Urso was born and reared in Clarksburg, WV. Upon gradua- tion from high school in 1950, Carmen was drafted for military service and joined the United States Navy and was sworn in on November 1, 1950. After 4 years of service, Carmen worked in the auto industry in Detroit and decided to put his GI Bill to use. After earning his BA de- gree, Carmen secured a social studies teaching position in 1964 with Fairfax County Schools while working on a MA degree in Guidance and Counseling. Carmen retired in 1986 and continued to work in the Adult Education Division after retirement. In 1987, it was decided that the old Groveton HS facility would be transformed into the Bryant Adult Center. It was there that Carmen would spend the next 31 years working in various programs, mainly the Project Opportunity Program (Teen Mothers), which served as the class for Jobs for Virginia Graduates. The program proved to be a successful one since grant funds were always awarded each year. Carmen teamed with our be- loved Liz Link. Carmen’s career spans 52 years in Fairfax County Schools and includes being a student counselor at Ft. Hunt HS, Program Director (Landmark Career Academy), Adult Ed counselor (Edison Adult Center), night school coun- selor and Project Opportunity counselor (Bryant High School), Assistant Principal of summer school and Career Specialist for Jobs for Virginia Graduates. Carmen is married and has 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren. Carmen has served as a JVG Specialist for 18 years at Bryant High School in Fairfax County. Congratulations on your “final retirement”! "The JVG Specialists are the backbone of our program and Carmen is an outstand- ing example of a Specialist who cares deeply for his students. It was an honor to work with him at Bryant for the last 20 years." Barry Glenn, JVG President & CEO
  • 2. JVGPage 2 JVG Hosts Student Le JVG hosted its annual Student Leadership Conferences in Roanoke on October 11th at the Hotel Roanoke and Con- ference Center and on October 13th at the Omni Richmond Hotel. Over 125 students from 25 JVG programs across the Commonwealth attended the events. The purpose of the event is to emphasize to our JVG students that even though they have been labeled “at-risk”, they can become leaders. Job Specialists, guests, and Board members were also in attendance. A student President and Vice-President were elected from each region (eastern Virginia and western Virginia). JVG will send the officers and their chaperones to an overnight in Richmond to visit the Capitol and spend a day at the General Assembly. The agenda for the day included registration, an ice-breaker activity, a team building activity (building the tallest balloon tower), JVG State Student Officer Speeches & State Officers Election, a Keynote Speaker, and lunch with JVG Board Members and guests. We want our JVG students to leave the conference knowing we (the Specialists, Board Members, and business representatives) are there to assist and to encourage them as they seek their career and higher education goals. It is our desire that they leave with confidence and a positive outlook. For many of our students this is the first experience they have had outside their hometown environments. Katharine Claytor, Vice President of Human Resources, Delta Den- tal, and member of the JVG Board of Directors spoke to our students in Roanoke. Ms. Claytor encouraged the students to stop and take a “Career Selfie”. She advised five lessons in leadership: relationships matter, good communication is essential, one does not need a fancy title to make a difference, learn from difficult times, and go after ex- periences. Jackson Leonard from Carroll County was elected west- Katharine Claytor with newly elected western Virginia Co-Presidents: Isaiah Paredes (Carroll County) and Mary Muindi (Danville). Jobs for Virginia Graduates State Officers from Northhampton High School Visit the Capitol. The JVG student officers and their JVG Specialist traveled to Richmond on Wednesday, February 8, for dinner with Barry and Tem- ple Glenn at the Tobacco Company and an overnight stay at the Richmond Omni. On Thursday morning the guests were hosted by JVG Chair, The Honorable Eileen Filler-Corn, and JVG President & CEO, Barry Glenn, for a visit and tour of the Virginia General Assembly and Capitol. JVG State student officers Johnny Sample (President) and Quazhanik Upshur (Vice-President) along with their Specialist, Sandra Chandler had the opportunity to visit with Virginia Lt. Governor, Ralph S. Northam (who grew up on the Eastern Shore where Northampton High School is located) and Representative Robert S. Bloxom, Jr., 100th District, which includes the students’ Northampton County. The Honorable Eileen Filler- Corn, Virginia House of Delegates in the 41st District, introduced the JVG students, JVG Specialist, and Barry Glenn who were sitting in the Gallery, from the floor of the Virginia House of Delegates. It was an honor to be introduced from the floor of the Virginia House of Delegates! State Officers Visit

  • 5. Page 5 AT&T Helps Jobs for Virginia Rockville, VA (March 16, 2017) - Jobs for Virginia Graduates (JVG) received a $10,000 contribution from AT&T to support Jobs for Virginia Student Leadership Conferences that provide opportunities for students to learn critical job-related skills and to network with potential employers. “The AT&T funding will allow JVG to reach approximately 500 students in the two restructured Student Leadership Conferences next fall. I greatly appreciate the role AT&T plays with its support of Jobs for Virginia Graduates. The company has demonstrated its commitment to the needs of our at-risk students in preparing them to enter the workforce,” said Barry Glenn, president and CEO of JVG. “Removing barriers to academic success and career growth is a core prin- ciple driving our community investments,” said Vince Apruzzese, region- al vice president for AT&T in Virginia. “We want to help provide Virgin- ia’s young people with opportunities for growth that will serve us well now and into the future. Supporting JVG is one way to do that.” JVG is a statewide program for at-risk youth with the mission to identify high school students who face barriers to education, and to guide each one on to a successful path toward continued education, a meaningful career, and productive adulthood. Utilizing the Jobs for America’s Grad- uates (JAG) Model Programs, JVG delivers a unique set of services in- cluding 12 months of post-graduation follow-up services. Through the Senior and Multi-Year Programs, JVG facilitates learning, skill development and community involvement. The picture to the right was taken in the House Chambers at the Richmond Capitol. Petersburg Jobs for Virginia Graduates partnered with Virginia Blood Services to hosts its annual blood drives. Virginia Blood Services is a not for profit blood service that has been serving Virginians since 1974. VBS supports patients throughout Virginia. VBS gave out over $113,000 last school year in High School Scholarship funds to Virginia High Schools! They are proud to have Petersburg High School as a part of the High School Blood Program and a partner in saving lives. Due to the dedication and teamwork of the students enrolled in JVG; 79 students, faculty, staff, parents and community members participated in the blood drives at Petersburg High this year. We collected 35 donations which can help save up to 105 lives! The Jobs for Virginia Graduates job specialist, Mrs. Rebecca Mullin, coaches students to help make the blood drives a success. The Virginia Blood Services High School Scholarship Program Award for Peters- burg High School is $ 1250 total! This year the scholarship was shared by ten Jobs for Virginia Graduates students who all donated blood. In addition, this years blood drive committee pulled in another lifesaving organization; Be The Match. Be The Match is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program ® (NMDP), which manages the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world. Be The Match was able to successfully register 20 students, facul- ty, staff, parents and community members to become potential bone marrow donors. Petersburg High School JVG students are focused on servant leadership and saving lives across the nation! Great Job!

  • 7. Page 7 The Importance of Etiquette By Sharon Owens, JVG Specialist—Russell County Career & Technology Center Seniors from the JVG program at the Russell County Career and Technology Center recently attended a business etiquette luncheon at the Virginian Golf Club in Bristol, Virginia. The students were challenged outside of their comfort zones in a social setting with area business leaders, school administrators and peers. Dressed in business attire, the event began with a “mocktail hour” which enabled students to practice the skill of creating a positive first impression while gaining self confidence. “ I liked the food. It was fun getting dressed up and talking with all the adults. I felt like I was in high society for the day. ” (Cody Jordan) The students were served a three course meal, consisting of a farm-to-table salad, 4 oz. Flank Steak, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Parmesan Whipped Potatoes, Green Beans and Flourless Chocolate Torte for dessert. Students networked with business leaders and peers at their tables while enjoying the meal. Also during lunch, The Virginian Golf Clubs Director of Club Events Heather Garrison, Chef Travis, and Golf Course Superintendent Chuck James spoke about what their jobs entailed and the paths that lead to their current positions. “ It was nice. I really enjoyed talking with Mr. (Adam) Wilson. He was fun.” (Anthony Lester) In today’s fiercely competitive job market and economy, graduates need every skill they can acquire to get an edge on the competition. Good manners aren’t about “putting on airs.” They are about making people feel at ease—at the table, in business meetings, and at social events. The impression you make on someone determines your ability to succeed as much as your on-the-job abilities and knowledge. “Just wanted to say KUDOS on a JOB WELL DONE yesterday! What those students learned in a few hours, as they ap- plied everything they learned this year, they’ll carry with them for a lifetime. I loved how they were challenged out of their comfort zones and to see them rise to the occasion. I don’t doubt they’ll each succeed in life. “ (Mary Smith,DARS) RCCTC would like to thank Cleco Corporation, Adam Wilson Auctioneers, Ltd., Strongwell Corporation, Department for Aging & Rehabilitative Services, Kissito Healthcare, Friends of Russell County Virginia Animal Shelter, Russell County Board of Supervisors, The Southwest Virginia Alliance for Manufacturing, Inc. and Russell County School Administra- tors for your attendance and your continued support. We want to extend a very special Thank You to The Virginian Golf Club for hosting this event. Virginia Randolph has a Great Year! Students at the Academy at Virginia Randolph had a busy school year! JVG students started out by electing career association officers and attending the State Leadership Conference in Richmond. In November, stu- dents started planning and implementing their community service project. Students collected items for Samaritan’s Purse— Operation Shoebox in which they had to fill a shoebox with various items to be sent to underprivileged children in other countries. Students collected enough to fill 20 boxes! They then travelled to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church to help sort, pack and load all of the boxes! JVG students also had the opportunity to hear numerous guest speakers, participate in a college and career fair, and go on several field trips including one to Busch Gardens! Overall, they had a great year!
  • 8. JVGPage 8 Award Winning JVG Student! James Bouie, JVG student from Randolph-Henry High School in Charlotte County, has celebrated an award-winning senior year. "He is an amazingly, talented artist and a wonderful young man. It has been such a joy having him as a JVG student and watching his success in the art world! He gave me an awesome sketch of Jimmi Hendrix as a gift for my classroom!” says RHHS JVG specialist Rhonda Benn. James' drawing of Nelson Mandela was chosen earlier in May by the Virginia School Board Association to repre- sent Region 8 and hang in the State Superintendent of Public Instruction in Richmond (see picture below). His sketches of Muhammad Ali and Tupac have both been displayed at Longwood University and the Longwood Center for Visual Arts. "I keep pushing a career with Disney", chuckles Mrs. Benn. James won't rule it out but plans to begin college this fall as an art major. Craig County Students Make College Visits a Priority By Lauren Burgess, JVG Specialist Since my JVG group were all seniors this year, we toured colleges in the area and enjoyed their dining halls to help this group make their final decisions. We went to Virginia Tech, Radford, and Virginia Western. The students were able to talk to admissions departments, actual college students, and the financial aid counselors. They were also able to tour specific departments, see dorm rooms, and eat pretty amazing lunches. Due to these visits, we had at least ten students ask for help applying to colleges when they had initially thought they would not fit in at college, and 5 change their mind from a 2 year to a 4 year. I really hope we can keep these visits up and help students see or just hear about opportunities they might not have considered before.
  • 9. Page 9Volume 21 JVG Program Plants the Seeds for Success The inaugural Jobs for Virginia Graduates program at New HOPE Academy proved to be a huge success. In all, 36 students enrolled in the curriculum and learned techniques that will serve them not only as they enter the work force for the first time, but into their respective careers after graduation. The learning process goes well beyond the traditional classroom. New HOPE students received invaluable instruc- tion from successful entrepreneurs in the community through assemblies, mentoring programs and leadership con- ferences. As part of the curriculum, NHA students received training in resume-building, cover letter writing, inter- viewing techniques and the importance of soft skills (i.e., making eye-contact, firm handshake, and good communi- cation). We strive to teach our students how to dress for the job they want after graduation, and not necessarily for the one in which they are applying. This preparation paid off in an open-interview job fair conducted by the Hopewell-area Hardee’s restaurants in April. All seven of those who attended the session came away with job offers. Moreover, Hardee’s management commented that NHA students were the best-prepared of the schools that attended the event. The New HOPE Academy Jobs for Virginia Graduates program initiated a weekly Dress for Success Day during the 2016-17 school year. Each Wednesday, JVG students came to school looking like they were ready for a day at the office than a day in the classroom. The first Dress for Success day gave students the opportunity to stand out among their peers and show them proper workplace attire. Wednesdays were also opportunities for the students to meet with area business leaders and mentors through assemblies and one-on-one contact. New HOPE students had the opportunity to meet with 104.7 FM “The Beat” announcer Cavell Phillips and learned what it takes to become a suc- cess in electronic media. Jobs for Virginia Graduates CEO Barry Glenn spoke to NHA students about the im- portance of being prepared when seeking employment. Charlottesville, JVG Specialist Deb Tewksbury At Charlottesville High School, marketing students had a busy spring. Quarter 3 was focused on entrepreneurship, with a culminating event at the Tom Tom Found- ers Festival on April 13, 2017. Students created a business idea and presented it to local business leaders. In the photo, Christian V. presents his concept to local lead- er from the Chamber of Commerce, Frank Squillace. Students from around the re- gion presented their ideas before a panel of judges at the Tom Tom Youth Sum- mit. It was great to learn from other students' presentations, as well as hearing from successful, young entrepreneurs in their keynote speeches. In April, we had a visit with Sgt. Bland, from the US Army. He did mock interviews with students and other activities. In the photo, Kamran A. is "interviewing" for a job as a doctor. The students really enjoyed his advice and enthusiasm. CHS specialist, Deb Tewksbury, is very thankful for her current stu- dents. Our 2017 seniors are about to graduate in June, and they are prepared for success!

Chesterfield Alternative Education (JVG Specialist Beth Connor) students and staff had the opportunity to tour the recently renovated train shed behind Main Street Station in Shockoe Bottom, Richmond VA . The two year 48 mil- lion dollar project was done by Taylor-Parrish construction. Jim Benn, the project manager spoke at length with our students regarding the many occupations that were involved in the large renovation of this building that was origi- nally built in 1901. Students were able to ask Mr. Benn questions relating to their career interests in the construction field. Afterward the students donned hard hats and were able to get a very detailed tour of the shed . The shed is encased in glass and can host 2000 people for events. It will also be the home of Richmond tourism and other re- tailers. Our students were in awe of this amazing project. They left very excited about pursuing careers in archi- tecture and construction. The morning ended with pizza at Bottom Ups Pizza. It was a great day and a big thank you to Mr. Benn whose dedication and enthusiasm was very motivating to our students. (Jim Benn is the husband of our Charlotte County JVG Specialist, Rhonda Benn.) Manchester High School, Chesterfield, JVG Specialist Kristin Breslin This year, our JVG students adopted a family as our "Angel Family" for the holidays.
