PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
Present Position;- General Manager, Main Tool Company Ltd part of the AMS Group
Practical Background;- Time served engineer in a sub contract precision engineering
environment, manufacturing precision component parts for the Oil & Gas, Aerospace,
Marine and Food Industries. I have vast experience in CNC machining, as well as an
extensive background in Jig & Fixture, Press Tool and Special Purpose Machine Design. I
have also worked as a Project Engineer responsible for Key Customer accounts.
Academic Background;-
MSc, Mechanical Engineering (Design).
BEng(Hons), Mechanical Engineering with Electronic Systems.
Responsibilities;- As the General Manager of Main Tool I am responsible for the day to
day running of the company. In peak times the company has employed over 50 people,
with an annual turnover of £5 million. I report directly to Stephen Hoggan Managing
Director at AMS in Coatbridge.
Personal Input;-
I started running the company in 2011 and had a vision of how we needed to change the
service we offered our customers. At that time Main Tool had only single function
dedicated machine tools. To offer our increasing Oil & Gas customer’s a more cost
effective and quicker, turn around machining service, I restructured the company to
have dedicated customer serving project engineers and also setup a department of two
manufacturing engineers responsible for programming all the CNC machine tools offline
using Mastercam computer aided manufacturing software. These engineers were also
responsible for continuous job improvement. I also introduced three large capacity “C-
Axis” mill turn Samsung lathes which helped us manufacture parts in less operations,
therefore more efficient, which helped us reduce cost and delivery times to our
customers. Customer relationship management is a key part of my job, I regularly visit
our customers to source new business, and to also make sure they are happy with the
service that we are providing them. By working closely with our customer’s we aim to
meet and exceed their expectations.
While working with Aker Solutions I managed to setup a frame agreement with them for
8 key component parts, which means that when these components are required at any
of their plants in the world, we as the single source supplier, supply to them at an
agreed price and delivery. The value of this contract is worth £0.5 to £1 million a year.
In 2011, I brought Halliburton on board as a new customer, and got Main Tool onto
their approved vendor’s list, and in 2013 Main Tool did £1 million pounds worth of
business with Halliburton in Arbroath.
My extensive machine shop management and theoretical knowledge have made me
highly qualified to take the company into the 21st century.
