NUH is the 4th
largest trust in the country with one of the largest and busiest Critical Care Units,
Major Trauma units and Emergency Department in the country. It has all the financial, operational
and clinical challenges of a typical NHS organisation.
In conjunction withanactive clinical role asaConsultantinAdultCritical Care medicineacrossNUH,
Davidhas a significantvisibleclinical leadershiprole providingBoardlevelassurance and
accountabilityforall supportservicesacrossthe Trust.
His managerial responsibility includes Theatres, Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Critical Care Outreach,
Resuscitation, Therapy Services, Pharmacy, Pain Management, Diagnostic and Interventional
Imaging,Outpatients, Pre-oppathwayand DayCase Units, Medical Physicsand Clinical Engineering,
Sterile Servicesand Stores. Intermsof workforce andbudgetaryresponsibilitythis accounts for just
over one third of the Trust.
In addition he is part of the Divisional Director Integration Committee; providing guidance and
clinical advice tothe Monitor/CQC supportedstrategicmergerbetweenSherwoodForestHospital’s
Foundation Trust and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust which will deliver one of the
country’s largest NHS Trust.
Other major current projects include the role of Senior Responsible Officer for NUH PACS/ EMRAD
consortium, a major IT solution being deployed across 7 East Midlands Trusts delivering a £30m
technological innovative seamless image sharing solution along with novel new workforce and
workflowsopportunities. This project has been adopted by the Royal College of Radiologists as an
example of ‘Daltonnewwaysof working’andiscurrentlyatechnology‘Vanguard project’ attracting
over £1.7m funding.
Davidalsohas a significantwider NHS Leadership role as the Lead Clinical Director for the National
network of medical leaders in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Management with over 320
members. He is a co-opted member of Council of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, is a
representative on a number of the major College committees and lectures locally, regionally and
nationally on medical leadership.
2. Priorto this,he was the Clinical DirectorforDiagnosticsandClinical Supportandadditionally Clinical
Director for Specialist Support Directorates for 3 years and Head of Service Adult Critical Care for 7
years.
Before this was the East Midlands Regional Adviser for Intensive Care Medicine for 8 years and
preceding this, the local College Tutor. He was the inaugural acting Head of school for ICMin the
East Midlands for 9 months.
During this time he was significantly involved in developing and launching the dual CCST/ CCT
programme opening up Intensive Care Medicine training and the ACS programme.
He continues to be actively involved clinically along with juggling the competing demands of
anaesthesia and critical care requirements, ED and major trauma activity, speciality workforce
challenges and NHS financial compliance.
