4. David and Fran Hatherton of NextEnergy
receive 2010 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur
of the Year Award for Cleantech.
NextEnergy founders win the 2010 Ernst & Young Ontario
Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Cleantech.
Elmira, ON, October 27, 2010 – NextEnergy Inc. and its founders David and Fran Hatherton were the
proud recipients of the 2010 Ernst & Young Ontario Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Cleantech
category. This prestigious award was presented at the Gala event held at the Toronto Convention Centre
on October 25.
"I couldn't be happier for David and Fran’s big win at Ernst &
Young's Ontario Entrepreneur of the Year finals (Cleantech),”
comments Greg MacKenzie, Manager Tax Services, Ernst & Young.
“NextEnergy is a great success story and is more than deserving of
the recognition. Geothermal technology is very important in
establishing a sustainable energy mix, the Hathertons’ contribution
to this industry is something that will be appreciated for generations
to come.”
Based out of Elmira, ON, NextEnergy is Canada’s leading designer
and marketer of geothermal heating and cooling systems. Founded
in 1998 by David and Fran, NextEnergy has experienced strong
growth and expansion, now offering geothermal solutions across
all of Canada and some parts of the US.
“This award represents a shot of recognition to the entire
geothermal industry,” explains David Hatherton. “Geothermal technology has lived in the shadow of other
Cleantech technologies for far too long and is now emerging to the forefront of the sector.”
With over 30 years in geothermal, the Hathertons and NextEnergy are recognized as pillars in the
industry. In 2005 they constructed their national head office, a zero emission office and warehouse
powered 100% by geothermal and wind energy, one of the first of it’s kind in Canada. NextEnergy has
played an integral role in the development of several industry documents such as the Canadian
GeoExchange Coalition’s first training standard.
When asked about the key contributors to NextEnergy’s growth, Hatherton doesn’t hesitate. “We’ve got a
great team here, many have been with us since the early years. Even with our strong bench, we’d be no
where today without our national dealer network. These dealers have stood by NextEnergy through the
highs and the lows. In all actuality, this award represents their independent leadership and growth as
much as NextEnergy’s. Fran and I want to thank all our dealers for their support and partnership.”
About NextEnergy Inc.
NextEnergy understands the value of high quality product and providing a professional, consistent level of
service from planning to implementation. NextEnergy is constantly striving to offer consumers a viable,
accessible green energy solution for their family and for future generations.

Coalition’s (CGC) Prizes for Excellence and Leadership at national conference
Montréal, November 30, 2006 – Dessau-Soprin’s award winning École du Tournant and David Hatherton,
CEO of NextEnergy Geothermal Solutions and considered by many as the pioneer of
the Canadian geoexchange industry, were recipients of the first annual Canadian GeoExchange
Coalition’s (CGC) Prizes for Excellence and Leadership at the CGC’s national industry conference.
“This first annual conference and the recognitions bestowed are milestones for our industry because for the first
time, stakeholders from coast to coast, representing all sectors of the industry gathered together to discuss and
debate policy and business issues that will shape the future of our industry for the years to come,” said CGC
executive director, Denis Tanguay. “The overall atmosphere during the event was extremely positive and the
high level discussions that took place clearly proved that industry leaders are interested in working with a
professional industry association able to represent the overarching interests of stakeholders in a unified and
strong voice,” added Mr. Tanguay.
The Prizes for Excellence and Leadership were awarded at the Canadian geoexchange industry’s national
conference held at the Hilton Lac-Leamy in Gatineau, Quebec from November 27-28, 2006. Eleven projects
were short-listed as finalists for the Prize for Excellence and there were six submissions for the Prize for
Leadership.
An independent jury of energy experts agreed to manage the selection process. Jury members included: Dr.
Murray Stewart, President of the Energy Council of Canada, Mr. Tyler Hamilton, Columnist, Toronto Star, Mr.
Simon Knight, President and CEO, Climate Change Central and Mr. Bruce Sampson, Vice-President,
Sustainability, BC Hydro.

Sourcing Earth’s energy potential
8. This is the result of an introduction David Hatherton
made to NRCan, Ottawa Ontario, on behalf of the
Geothermal Heat Pump Consortium Washington DC
Mobilization, Conditioning and Transformation of the Ground Source
Heat Pump Market in Canada
Closing: 07/04/2000
PROPOSED CONTRACTOR:
Geotherma Heat Pump Consortium (GHPC)
701 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington DC 20004-2696
ESTIMATE OF THE COST OF THE PROPOSED CONTRACT: $ 870,000.00
ADVANCE CONTRACT AWARD NOTICE:
This is a notice of intent to solicit a bid and negotiate with only
one firm. Suppliers, on or before the closing date indicated, may
identify their interest and demonstrate their capability of performing
the contract. Your written response must provide sufficient evidence
(ie specifications, technical data, drawings or any other proof) that
clearly demonstrates that your product or service is capable of
fulfilling this requirement. Supplier responses received as a result
of this notice on or before the closing date will be considered solely
for the purpose of deciding whether or not to conduct a competitive
procurement. The Crown reserves the right not to open this
procurement to competition. Suppliers may address any questions to
the Contracting Officer named in the notice. Documents may be
submitted in either official language of Canada.
REQUIREMENT:
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) requires to create a functional
framework in Canada, for the accelerated take-up of ground source
heat pump systems heating and cooling technology for application in
the buildings sector. Programming and technical assistance is required
to mobilize, condition and transform the Canadian market for ground
9. source heat pump or earth energy systems technology. This will
include the provision of a package of services to assist Natural
Resources Canada in the development and implementation of a
dedicated marketing initiative for ground source heat pump or
GeoExchange systems in Canada and to assist in building a Canadian
Geothermal Energy Coalition in Canada by engaging the support of
Canadian utilities and professional bodies representing the drilling;
civil and mechanical engineering and contracting; hydrogeology and
environmental industries.
The GHPC is a non-profit organization with participation and support
from the United States Department of Energy, the United States
Environmental Protection Agency, United States electrical utilities
and their institutions, equipment manufacturers and their allies.
NRCan requires the knowledge and expertise of GHPC in re-creating for
the Canadian market, its success in providing a marketing momentum
for earth energy systems in the United States. GHPC has established a
public-private sector marketing consortium comprised of electrical
utilities, HVAC manufacturers and dealers; design engineers,
drillers; loop manufacturers and installers; the United States
Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, to
promote this technology in the United States (US). Since its
inception in 1994, sales of ground source heat pump systems in the US
have increased 20 per cent annually. It has developed a number of
initiatives to support marketing issues related to competitiveness of
this technology; building public confidence in the technology; and
strengthening the industry infrastructure. The capability to tackle
similar issues in Canada is germane to Natural Resources Canada's
(NRCan) requirements with respect to implementing a part of Canada's
renewable energy strategy. It is not economic to reproduce the
resources that are already available through the GHPC.
REASON FOR THE PROPOSED DIRECT AWARD:
As per NAFTA, Article 1016, limited tendering procedures can be used
where, for reasons connected with the protection of patents,
copyrights or other exclusive rights, or proprietary information or
where there is an absence of competition for technical reasons, the
goods and services can be supplied only by a particular supplier and
no reasonable alternative or substitute exists.
10. GHPC holds the intellectual property rights to the materials required
by NRCan in order to build a marketing momentum for ground source heat
pump systems in Canada. GHPC's intellectual property represents over
US$50 million worth of soft technology developed through funding from
the United States government and from the GeoExchange industry in the
United States.
NRCan requires access to GHPC's reserve of information and
technical resources in order to fulfil the needs of Canadians with
respect to this technology and to GHPC's links with professional
engineering and mechanical contracting networks; ground source heat
pump training networks and regulatory frameworks governing geothermal
energy systems design and installation practices, for which it holds
the GeoExchange service mark.
