This document provides instructions for a five paragraph essay assignment on Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. The introduction must contain topic sentences outlining each body paragraph. Each body paragraph argues whether one of Janie's three husbands was a good match and discusses what she learned from that marriage, citing evidence from the text. The closing paragraph summarizes the arguments and can earn extra credit by discussing a theme in the novel. Students will lose points for missing topic sentences.

1. Their Eyes Were Watching God Essay
Instructions: For this assignment, you will bewritinga fiveparagraph essay. The goal everyone to use strong reasoningand
evidence; 50% of the essay is based on evidence and supportstudents are usingfor their essay;students will no longer recei ve
points for topic sentences, but will losepoints for NOT usingtopic sentences. Below you will seethe guidelines for this assignment:

Introduction: 4 sentences. The introduction contains 1) a topical sentencethat will discuss whatthe paper is about, 2) a sentence
that explains whatthe 1st body paragraph is about,3) a sentences that explains whatthe 2nd body paragraph is about,4) a sentence
that explains whatthe 3rd body paragraph is about.
1st Body Paragraph: a FULL paragraph thatargues if Logan was a good match for Janie. Duringthis paragraph,you must include
something that Janielearned duringher marriagewith Logan. Explain your reasoningand use evidence from the text. YOU MUST
have a topical sentence; write something as simpleas “In this paragraph, I will bearguingthatLogan was….”. You may use your own
wording, but I must see what you will be arguing.
2nd Body Paragraph: A FULL paragraph that argues if Jody was a good match for Janie. Duringthis paragraph,you must include
something that Janielearned duringher marriagewith Jody. Explain your reasoningand use evidence from the text. YOU MUST
have a topical sentence; write something as simpleas,“Now I will be discussingthat the relationship between Janie and Jody was...”.
You may use your own wording, but I must see what you will bearguing.
3rd Body Paragraph: A FULL paragraph thatargues if Tea Cake was a good match for Janie. Duringthis paragraph,you must include
something that Janielearned duringher marriagewith Tea Cake. Explain your reasoningand useevidence from the text. YOU MUST
have a topical sentence; write something as simpleas,“For this part of my essay,I will bewritingabout Tea Cake’s relationship with
Janie….”. You may useyour own wording, but I must see what you will bearguing.
Closing Paragraph: Briefly summarizes what the essay was about, and spends time closingup everything. Extra credit: Discusses a
theme that Zora Neal Hurston wrote into her novel. Extra creditmust be in the ClosingParagraph to earn credit.
*** NOTE ***: Each body paragraph mustcontain a real idea that Janielearned duringher various relationships/marriages;do not
state basic things shelearned such as “Janielearned how to be a farmer”; try to discusssomethingrelevant to her personal
character. You may not repeat ideas for the three paragraphs;each idea mustbe unique.
Grading Rubric
