Welcome Junior Scientists! Let’s learn about Magnets
Magnets have been around forever! The Chinese and Greeks thought magnets were magical! Those magical rocks were called lodestones . We looked at them on Monday.
In 1600, William Gilbert, an English doctor, was the first to say that the earth is a giant magnet, and he predicted that the ends of the Earth were magnetic. That was over 400 years ago!
Are some parts of magnets stronger than others? The ends of a magnet are where the magnetic effect is the strongest. These are called “poles.” Each magnet has 2 poles – 1 north, 1 south.

Poles that are the same, push away from each other. Poles that are different, pull each other together.
What happens if you cut a magnet in half? You get 2 magnets!
How to break a magnet: 1. Drop it 2. Heat it
