This is a story about I created the setting for my Fantasy Fiction Novels. Preparing a fantasy world for game creation, novels, or even movies may use my processes. Anyone may employ this Powerpoint presentation.

How to Create a Fantasy World for Publication
1. How to Create A
Fantasy World for
Publications
A story which began way back in February 1975
with a game, a dream, and dear friends.
A Paladin in Hell
1st Edition AD&D Players Handbook Pg. 23
2. Let’s start at my beginning.
February 1st, 1975
• Way back in 1975, when
Advanced Dungeons and
Dragons began to get popular,
we really only had two available
“fantasy worlds” to play in.
Endor/Middle Earth by JRR
Tolkien and The World of
Greyhawk by Gary Gygax. Shall
we visit the Vast Swamp where
the Tomb of Horrors was or the
village of Hommlet and the
Temple of Elemental Evil near
the city of Verbobonc? The
Valley of the Mage or the Wild
Coast gave us hours of fun!
3. Designing a world from
scratch. Why?
• After endless hours of battling Sauron and the Evil
forces of Iuz and the Horned Society, my players in
my game began to get bored and wanted new
settings. How did I start? I designed a history for
the Palamaran Empire just like Tolkien did. Tolkien
proved that an extensive history, maps and
appendices increased every readers fun.
• Where did I get my material? All those history
books people hated reading in Middle and High
Schools. Here are a couple of my favorites.
4. I started off with Paladon
City, the Capital of Palamar!
• My world began at the capital of the Palamaran Empire
which became known as Paladon City. This major city has
over 100,000 people and the most impressive Imperial
Palace Castle Keep in the Empire.
• The details are everything. What makes up this city? Noble
estates, merchants quarter and central market place, temple
areas, GMU campus, Harbor wharf area, Slave pens,
Taverns, Colosseum sections, Commoners homes, slums,
beggars and thieves guild areas, Bivouacs for Imperial
Guardsmen, NPCs and regular haunts. Who is your favorite
cutpurse, barmaid, or merchant? Which Imperial Guardsman
harasses your Party the most?
• Here is Cosplayer Samantha Kitts portraying Princess
Christina Medford from my books!
5. Taverns, Inns,
Brothels, Bars and
Gambling Casinos
• No game or book is fun unless you
have places where the main player
characters get into serious and
sometimes fatal trouble.
• Whenever someone at the Drunken
Kitty Cat tavern gets sloppy drunk,
they usually pass out. Locals refer
to this as “falling down next to the
cat.” A character might say, “Ugh.
Derrick fell down next to the cat
again.”
• Tavern mascot is a female calico
cat named Dancy Sunshine.
6. Expanding from Paladon City: Pirates and
Ocean Adventures with the Forsaken Islands!
• After several adventures within
Paladon City, my AD&D players
began exploring the countryside
with the town of Lilac Hill
nestled within the Smoky Hills
south of the capital.
• Several players wanted pirate
adventures on the high seas. So
Paladon City was placed at the
major Mullica River delta with
the Topaz Ocean off its northern
coasts. The Forsaken Islands
(See Book 3) complete with
Dragon on the Western one,
were added four days sea travel
north.
7. After Decades of Playing AD&D…I grew up.
Then I grew more by playing again!
• From 1994 – 2012, I stopped
playing AD&D and RPGs. All of
my notes, papers, maps and
adventures I tossed into a filing
cabinet. I even sold items like
my 180+ Dragon Magazines.
• 2007 - On a lark, I wrote a short
story and a friend liked it. So I
tossed it into the filing cabinet.
• In 2012, I started DMing again.
Tell Story with Laura Thompson.
• Arthur, Laura, and Cousin
David.
8. Building a Continent Piece by Piece.
• With Laura’s help, I decided to use my old maps and Palamaran
continent as the setting for my first book. This is why my first book is
dedicated to Laura Thompson. When the Righteous Inquisition comes
for me to punish my heresy and decadence, I will stand proudly and
yell…SHE DID IT! IT IS ALL HER FAULT!
• By pulling old maps together, fleshing out more details, and using the
locations logically in my books, everything seemed to fall together
perfectly. When preparing my draft for my first book, I finalized the
geography of Palamar which looked like….
9. THIS!!
I know what you are
thinking!
• OK – My attempt at a map of the Palamaran
Continent looks like a Fourth Grader’s science
diorama. WHY? Because I cannot draw worth
crap. So, I was at a complete loss as so how to
proceed. Then I remembered an old Geek Maxim:
“When in doubt – Go to a Gaming/Comic Book
convention and ask around.” So I did.
• On February 11th, 2015 I was at a local Comic
Book convention (ComicsExpo I think) and I
spoke with several different graphic and classical
artists. By sheer chance, I ran into a fellow named
Steve who had once worked for TSR if that means
anything to anyone here.
10. What Steve did - Divine Destiny!
• TSR – Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. was the company created by Gary
Gygax and Don Kaye to market their new AD&D games in 1973.
• Steve worked for them and assisted with developing many other maps,
books, games and I was very lucky to get his help.
• We did negotiate a price. Steve was unusually generous with me and
when you find the right person, anything is possible.
• Steve took my Palamaran Continent Map and he converted it into
black/white/gray format as I could not afford printing a color map
inside my books. I wanted something easy for readers to see and read.
