At the age of 21 David Lowe
was among 10 or so lucky young
winemakers in the Hunter Valley
working alongside the likes of
Len Evans and Murray Tyrrell.
As a group the young wine-
makers “took charge” and for
David what transpired was a suc-
cessful career now spanning 35
years.
His tireless effort among the
state’s wine industry was recog-
nised recently when he was pre-
sented with the 2013 Graham
Gregory Award at the NSW Wine
Awards.
“I was once told if you were
going to make it in the industry
you had to make your contribu-
tion count. You know, don’t be a
taker, be a giver,” Mr Lowe said on
Tuesday.
There can be no argument about
the Mudgee winemaker’s contribu-
tion to the wine industry across
Australia and internationally.
He previously held the position
of NSW Wine Industry
Association president, is current-
ly vice-president of the
Winemakers’ Federation of
Australia, is a member of the
strategic NSW Ministers’ Wine
Advisory Council, and is chair of
the Small Winemakers of
Australia.
Among other roles, he has also
been president of the Mudgee
Grape Growers Association, an
executive committee member of
the Hunter Valley Winemakers
Association and advisor to
Charles Sturt University’s wine
science school.
By all accounts Mr Lowe gave
an impassioned speech at the
NSW Wine Awards when accept-
ing his award. He joins Mudgee
wine leaders Bob Oatley, Bob
Roberts, and Gil Wahlquist as
recipients of the award.
“It was an emotional speech,”
Mr Lowe said.
“I was sitting at table one
among the chief judge and
Director General [of Primary
Industries] and thought it was a
nice touch as the outgoing presi-
dent.
“The next thing the Director
General got up and started talk-
ing about the Graham Gregory
Award.
“I’ve been giving it out over the
past 10 years but this time they
handed it to me.
