We describe the preliminary multi-parameter classification of ground coffee with NIR analysis using a Brimrose Luminar 5030 handheld analyser. Commercial coffee capsules of different variety were purchased and used for the analysis. NIR spectra were acquired aiming at distinguishing the different types of coffee as well as the caffeine content and the chlorogenic acids content. This preliminary analysis suggests that NIR analysis is able to segregate ground coffee according to all these parameters. We anticipate that with further data and modelling a finer classification may be possible, particularly the classification of ground coffee or coffee beans according to the sensory perception of the flavour.
