2. A unique conservation experience
The new Sumatran Tiger experience will be immersive,
educational, and will create a lasting impression and memory
of the issues that threaten the Sumatran Tigers’ survival. The
experience will inspire changes to attitudes and behaviours
around making sustainable product choices and supporting
conservation efforts. Small steps can make a big difference.
The new Sumatran Tiger experience
will enable the Zoo to:
•• Expand the tigers’ living areas and provide an enhanced
tiger breeding complex including maternity den,
•• Develop a world-class animal habitat that fosters an
intimate connection between animals and humans, and
•• Educate visitors on the plight of Sumatran Tigers in
an immersive, interactive way that will drive real behaviour
change outcomes to better protect and conserve
Sumatran Tigers.
Showcasing Sumatran Tigers
As part of the development of the new habitat, the living area
for the Sumatran Tigers will increase three fold. They will have
significantly more space and a magnificent old fig tree to climb
that will be contained within their exhibit. The area will support
a larger tiger group, enhancing the capability of the Zoo’s
conservation breeding program for this critically endangered
species. The design of the new, larger habitat will allow the tigers
to safely explore at night and enjoy their new environment.
The experience
The Sumatran Tiger experience will be an Indonesian-themed
exhibit where visitors can get close to mysterious Sumatran
Tigers and learn how simple shopping choices can help to
preserve their native habitat. With less than 400 Sumatran
Tigers left in the wild, the Zoo’s conservation breeding
program for this species is vitally important.
Immersive
The new immersive experience will transport visitors to Way
Kambas National Park in Sumatra, home to a number of rare
and precious animals including the critically endangered
Sumatran Tiger. On the ‘journey’ to Sumatra, visitors will see
the impact of deforestation firsthand.
Interactive
A rainforest trail, a smart mobile app for families,
identification charts and an interactive experience that
will show visitors how to take real action to help preserve
Sumatran Tigers, will inspire visitors to help make a difference.
Visual
Set within naturalistic habitat, visitors will be able to witness
the tremendous majesty of the Sumatran Tigers, viewing
them from various points including a themed ranger outpost.
Educational
Visitors will learn how to track and identify tigers, and most
importantly, learn what we can all do for tigers – choose only
products that use certified sustainably sourced palm oil to
help stop unsustainable palm oil plantations destroying the
last habitat of Sumatran Tigers.
Enhancing the visitor experience
Taronga Zoo delivers experiences and programs that create
genuine connections between people and wildlife. To continually
improve our animal habitats and enhance our visitors’
experiences, we need to invest in the future.
A $114.8 million development program was announced by
the NSW Government in March 2015 for the revitalisation of
the Taronga Zoo Visitor Experience. The development of the
Sumatran Tiger habitat will be the first of many transformations
over the next 10 years.
The Taronga Conservation Society Australia development
program is co-funded, with half of the support provided by the
NSW Government and half through the Zoo’s funding
program. The upgrade to the Taronga Zoo Visitor Experience
will deliver important new wildlife experiences and foster
unparalleled conservation education outcomes.
At Taronga, we believe we all have
a responsibility to make sure that
animals don’t just survive, but thrive.
To make that happen, there’s one
species that has to lead the way. Ours.
Building a Better Zoo Immersive Conservation Experiences
At Taronga, we are focused on
creating innovative and engaging
experiences that exceed visitor
expectations, inspire loyalty
and influence positive behaviour
change to support wildlife.
