Why solar energy?
Lower electricity bills, Government rebates
and pollution-free renewable energy are
powerful reasons to install solar panels. You
will make a positive contribution towards
reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increase
the value of your home or business and gain
peace of mind by remaining unaffected by
rising energy prices.
Australia is one of the sunniest countries in the world and
at Pyramid Power, we believe that because of the sensible
economic and environmental benefits, every home and
business should have solar generated electricity. We have
been installing solar power systems for over 25 years and
provide flexible, affordable solutions tailored to meet your
specific needs. Specialising in the design, supply, installation
and maintenance of clean energy systems you can be sure
that you will get the best advice and system you need.
“We were delighted with the extremely neat and efficient
service provided by Pyramid Power in installing our
solar energy panels. The result is outstanding, with
the reduction in electricity costs far exceeding our
expectations. Our sincere thanks to Pyramid Power.”
Anita & Neil
Solar power is the conversion of sunlight to electricity.

More benefits
of solar power
Solar power has increased in popularity
over the years as government incentives
and emerging technology make it more
economically viable to invest in renewable
energy. Pyramid Power is proud to assist
households, businesses and community
groups to install a clean energy solution that
offsets current energy usage, adds value to
homes, and provides protection from the
ever increasing costs of fossil fuelled power.

WHAT ARE RECS?
RECs are Renewable Energy Certificates
which are a non-means tested
incentive to discount the upfront cost
of renewable energy systems. A REC
is created by generating 1 mega-watt
hour (MWh) of renewable energy. This
offsets the consumption of 1MW of
non-renewable energy, reducing our
carbon footprint and helping Australians
to meet our Renewable Energy Target
of 20% additional renewable energy
production by 2020.
A REC is traded on a market similar
to the stock exchange for cash. When
you purchase and install an eligible
renewable energy system, RECs are
calculated on the FUTURE amount of
energy that will be generated by your
system over a set period of time.
The number of RECs that your renewable
energy system is able to create depends
on the size of your system (rated
output) and its location. Australia has
been divided into 4‘Solar Zones’which
represents the number of light hours.
Depending on which Solar Zone your
system is located will determine the
number of RECs you can create.

As energy costs continue
to rise, your solar system
has the potential to reduce
your energy bills. Choose
the right system for you.
Solar energy becomes
a valuable asset and
a significant factor in
assessing your property
value. Making the decision
to install solar on the roof
of your home is not only an
environmental move, but
an economic one as well.
All the electricity your
solar system generates is
fed into the mains grid.
Your production is paid
about 3 times the price you
pay for the Kw you buy.
According to the size of
your system, you can easily
make money.
These figures are only indicative and may change with modifications of feed-in tariff, market
forces and political decisions.

How the grid
connect system
works
SIMPLE, SAFE & ECONOMIC
Solar panels produce DC electricity
from sunlight. The inverter converts this
electricity to mains voltage alternating
current. It is connected to the utility meter.
Your production is fed into the mains grid.
The utility meter records two data: the kWhs
produced by the solar system and your
electricity consumption. Your electricity
retailer reduces your bill by the value of
what you sell. Depending on the size of your
system, you can even get a credit balance.
The cells or thin film circuits of the solar modules are
specially manufactured to respond to light by producing
electric current. The scientific term for“ solar electricity“ is“
photovoltaic“ energy–which means electricity from light.
The more light the cells get, the more electricity that can be
produced. These cells when connected together, laminated
and framed, are called a‘solar module’.

GRID CONNECT SOLAR ELECTRICITY
For properties that are already connected to the 240V AC mains power grid, there is obviously no
pressing requirement to generate and store sufficient power for the entire property, nor to prepare for
periods where no solar power can be generated by the solar modules. This means that a grid-tied
array can be as small or as large as you want - depending on your expectations and finances.
Overwhelmingly, the choice is to roof-mount a solar array. Ideally, the array should be north facing,
and at an angle of elevation so that the plane of the modules lies at 90 degrees to the sun for most of
the day. This provides a close approximation to the position in which a solar array produces its
maximum output. All systems should be installed by an accredited BCSE installer.

REMOTE AREA POWER
Known as Remote Area Power Supplies (RAPS), these systems are becoming more common in less
remote areas. They are more complex and expensive than grid connected systems because they need
to be self-sufficient.
The system should be designed to meet the required household load. Excess energy generated is
stored in batteries for use when the renewable source is not available. The battery bank should be
sufficient to provide power for several days.
RAPS systems are usually installed where electricity supply is not available or connection costs are
high. However, some people install RAPS to be independent from the mains supply or to have reliable
power in areas where blackouts are common.

SOLAR WATER PUMPING
If you need to supply water beyond the reach of the power lines, then solar power can solve the
problem. Photovoltaic powered pumps provide a welcome alternative to fuel burning engines,
windmills, and hand pumps. Thousands of solar powered pumps are working throughout the world.
These produce best during sunny weather when the need for water is greatest.
Solar water pumps are specially designed to utilize DC electric power from photovoltaic panels. They
must work during low light conditions at reduced power without stalling or overheating. Low volume
pumps use positive displacement (volumetric) mechanisms which seal water in cavities and force it
upward. Lift capacity is maintained even while pumping slowly. These mechanisms include
diaphragm, vane, and piston pumps. These differ from a conventional centrifugal pump that needs to
spin fast to work efficiently. Centrifugal pumps are used where higher volumes are required.

1 An array of solar modules produces
DC electricity from the sunlight.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
COMPONENTS
2 The inverter converts the DC electricity to
household AC current. This electricity first
feeds your electrical appliances.
It is connected to the utility meter.
3 The utility meter records net energy usage.
It spins backwards when your solar system
generates more electricity than you are
using or forward when you draw electricity
from the utility company (eg. at night or
when there is very low light).

Reduce your electricity bills
As energy costs continue to rise, your solar
system has the potential to reduce your energy
bills. Choose the right system for you!
Contribute to a sustainable future
With a solar system you will reduce greenhouse gas
emissions and make a commitment against climate
change. Renewable energy provides a safer, cleaner
opportunity for our future generations, so we may
continue to enjoy the natural resources that are free
from the Earth.
Increase your property value
Solar energy becomes a valuable asset and a
significant factor in assessing your property
value. Making the decision to install solar on the
roof of your home is not only an environmental
move, but an economic one as well.
Incentices available
and carbon credits
Government rebates are available in many parts
of Australia to assist you with the initial purchase
cost of a solar system.

NILEWIDE | QUARTERLY REVIEW
© nilewide 2006 | 1
T H E Q U A R T E R L Y S T R A T E G Y R E P O R T
JANUARY|FEBRUARY 2006
The fourth quarter of 2005 saw
several continuing trends:
polarisation of markets towards
discount and premium, consumer
generated media such as blogs
and podcasts, the metamorphosis
of TV, how to encourage and
measure word-of-mouth, and
how marketers may begin to
address these significant shifts.
Perhaps more importantly, it is
increasingly clear that marketers
should stop talking among
themselves and start speaking to
business leaders in a language
they understand.
Other buzzwords to heed (including
buzz marketing) are dialogues,
presence marketing, and boomers.
While companies are wondering
how to have dialogues with their
customers, it is clear most are
not having a dialogue. They are
still delivering a monologue.
Presence marketing suggests that
marketing will continue to look for
new channels where it can meet
the customer. But what age is this
elusive customer?
These trends all suggest a polarisation
of power. Originally the power was
in the hands of companies. Now the
wheel has turned.
The simple life
Few people have not at some point wished for a simple
life. If we apply a simplicity philosophy to marketing, it
becomes clear that marketing often makes life more
complicated, not simpler. In fact, marketers themselves
admit they have helped to make life more complex (78%
of UK marketers said so). Even so, it is not all their fault.
Technology has its part to play. In fact, an innate fear
of technology, or being left behind, can lead people to
upgrade before they need to (“tyranny of the upgrade”).
People may also choose
something with features
that exceed those they
really need. The paradox
of enhancement describes
the fact that people buy
something based on
certain features, and
do not see the difficulty
they will face in learning
to use these features.
Unsurprisingly they
never learn to use them.
Vodafone Simple is a
brand that goes some
way to addressing the
unnecessary complexity
of mobile phones, far
beyond helping to facilitate
conversations.
“I adore simple
pleasures. They
are the last refuge
of the complex.”
Oscar Wilde.
The same complexity
also underlies branding.
Much of the hype around
branding fails to recognise
that people are looking for
a product that is “simply
better” than the others in
the category. Perhaps the
category counts more than
the brand for a customer,
because they can live
without a certain brand of
toothpaste but they cannot
live without toothpaste.

Our sincere thanks to Pyramid Power.” Anita & Neil Solar power is the conversion of sunlight to electricity. 6 7 More benefits of solar power Solar power has increased in popularity over the years as government incentives and emerging technology make it more economically viable to invest in renewable energy. Pyramid Power is proud to assist households, businesses and community groups to install a clean energy solution that offsets current energy usage, adds value to homes, and provides protection from the ever increasing costs of fossil fuelled power. REDUCE YOUR ELECTRICITY BILLS INCREASE YOUR PROPERTY VALUE TURN YOUR BILL INTO A CREDIT INCENTIVE AVAILABLE AND CARBON CREDITS Government rebates are available in many parts of Australia to assist you with the initial purchase cost of a solar system. RECs are Renewable Energy Certificates which are a non-means tested incentive to discount the upfront cost of renewable energy systems. A REC is created by generating 1 mega-watt hour (MWh) of renewable energy. This offsets the consumption of 1MW of non-renewable energy, reducing our carbon footprint and helping Australians to meet our Renewable Energy Target of 20% additional renewable energy production by 2020. A REC is traded on a market similar to the stock exchange for cash. When you purchase and install an eligible renewable energy system, RECs are calculated on the FUTURE amount of energy that will be generated by your system over a set period of time. The number of RECs that your renewable energy system is able to create depends on the size of your system (rated output) and its location. Australia has been divided into 4‘Solar Zones’which represents the number of light hours. Depending on which Solar Zone your system is located will determine the number of RECs you can create. 4 3 2 1 Darwin Townsville Rockhampton Brisbane Sydney Melbourne Canberra Adelaide Perth Alice Springs Hobart As energy costs continue to rise, your solar system has the potential to reduce your energy bills. Choose the right system for you. Solar energy becomes a valuable asset and a significant factor in assessing your property value. Making the decision to install solar on the roof of your home is not only an environmental move, but an economic one as well. All the electricity your solar system generates is fed into the mains grid. Your production is paid about 3 times the price you pay for the Kw you buy. According to the size of your system, you can easily make money. These figures are only indicative and may change with modifications of feed-in tariff, market forces and political decisions. The inverter converts this electricity to mains voltage alternating current. It is connected to the utility meter. Your production is fed into the mains grid. The utility meter records two data: the kWhs produced by the solar system and your electricity consumption. Your electricity retailer reduces your bill by the value of what you sell. Depending on the size of your system, you can even get a credit balance. The cells or thin film circuits of the solar modules are specially manufactured to respond to light by producing electric current. The scientific term for“ solar electricity“ is“ photovoltaic“ energy–which means electricity from light. The more light the cells get, the more electricity that can be produced. These cells when connected together, laminated and framed, are called a‘solar module’. • 14. DANIEL CHARRON | 0417 644 048 NILEWIDE | QUARTERLY REVIEW © nilewide 2006 | 1 T H E Q U A R T E R L Y S T R A T E G Y R E P O R T JANUARY|FEBRUARY 2006 The fourth quarter of 2005 saw several continuing trends: polarisation of markets towards discount and premium, consumer generated media such as blogs and podcasts, the metamorphosis of TV, how to encourage and measure word-of-mouth, and how marketers may begin to address these significant shifts. Perhaps more importantly, it is increasingly clear that marketers should stop talking among themselves and start speaking to business leaders in a language they understand. Other buzzwords to heed (including buzz marketing) are dialogues, presence marketing, and boomers. While companies are wondering how to have dialogues with their customers, it is clear most are not having a dialogue. They are still delivering a monologue. Presence marketing suggests that marketing will continue to look for new channels where it can meet the customer. But what age is this elusive customer? These trends all suggest a polarisation of power. Originally the power was in the hands of companies. Now the wheel has turned. The simple life Few people have not at some point wished for a simple life. If we apply a simplicity philosophy to marketing, it becomes clear that marketing often makes life more complicated, not simpler. In fact, marketers themselves admit they have helped to make life more complex (78% of UK marketers said so). Even so, it is not all their fault. Technology has its part to play. In fact, an innate fear of technology, or being left behind, can lead people to upgrade before they need to (“tyranny of the upgrade”). People may also choose something with features that exceed those they really need. The paradox of enhancement describes the fact that people buy something based on certain features, and do not see the difficulty they will face in learning to use these features. Unsurprisingly they never learn to use them. Vodafone Simple is a brand that goes some way to addressing the unnecessary complexity of mobile phones, far beyond helping to facilitate conversations. “I adore simple pleasures. They are the last refuge of the complex.” Oscar Wilde. The same complexity also underlies branding. Much of the hype around branding fails to recognise that people are looking for a product that is “simply better” than the others in the category. Perhaps the category counts more than the brand for a customer, because they can live without a certain brand of toothpaste but they cannot live without toothpaste.
