This document discusses different types of energy sources. It divides energy into renewable and non-renewable sources. It describes the five major renewable energy sources as solar energy from the sun, geothermal energy from heat inside the earth, wind energy, biomass from plants, and hydropower from flowing water. It provides details on how solar energy, geothermal energy, wind energy and hydropower work as renewable energy sources.
3. Introductions
• Energy is the ability to do work
• Scientists define energy as the ability to do work.
4. Energy can be divided into renewable
and non-renewable.
Most of our energy is nonrenewable
• Petroleum
• Hydrocarbon gas liquids
• Natural gas
• Coal
• Nuclear energy
5. There are five major renewable energy sources
The major types or sources of renewable energy are:
• Solar energy from the sun
• Geothermal energy from heat inside the earth
• Wind energy
• Biomass from plants
• Hydropower from flowing water
6. Solar energy
Solar energy, radiation from the Sun capable of producing
heat, causing chemical reactions, or generating electricity.
We use solar thermal energy systems to heat:
• Water for use in homes, buildings, or swimming pools
• The inside of homes, greenhouses, and other buildings
• Fluids to high temperatures in solar thermal power plants
7. Geothermal energy is heat derived within the sub-surface of
the earth. Water and/or steam carry the geothermal energy
to the Earth's surface
Geothermal energy
8. Wind power is a clean and renewable energy source. Wind
turbines harness energy from the wind using mechanical
power to spin a generator and create electricity.
Wind energy
9. Hydropower
Hydropower, or hydroelectric power, is a renewable source of
energy that generates power by using a dam or diversion
structure to alter the natural flow of a river or other body of
water.
