I’m going to talk for a minute about one of my favorite places, Earth. I was born and raised here, and it’s the only place I’ve ever known. As I look around my small place on Earth I’m in constant awl. Living on our planet is one big adventure.
Have you ever taken the time to look around, I mean really look around. Our world is an assume, powerful place. From the very big, like the wind that blows and the water that flows.
To the very small, like the butterflies that glide and the ants that crawl. Our Earth is buzzing with activity and life. This activity and life is always changing. The Earth itself is also changing.
The Earth changes in many ways. Some changes you can see, like volcanoes creating new land or erosion taking land away. Other changes are harder to see, like the wind changing direction or the ocean levels raising and falling
Although you cannot see many of these changes, I bet you can feel them. Everytime you step outside you not only see the Earth, but you feel it too. And if you take the time to look around, you will see how the Earth changes. And one way it changes is the weather.
Our weather changes on a daily bases, but it also changes over the course of the year. Believe it or not, the weather follows a pattern. In the next few weeks you will learn about the weather pattern and how it changes over the course of a year.
You should remember what a pattern is from our math lessons. A pattern is something that repeats. And when we talk about weather repeating itself, we are talking about seasons. There are 4 seasons, spring, summer, fall, and winter.
Each season is different. Each season has something different to offer and experience. In spring the temperature starts to warm up and we get rain showers that help beautiful flowers to grow. There is an old saying is “April showers brings May flowers”.
In summer, the temperature gets even hotter. When we think of summer certain things come to mind, we think of long hot days, we think of swimming, and most importantly we think of summer vacations, no school.
In fall, as nature gets ready for winter, the warm summer days turn cooler. The temperature drops and the leaves turn colors. We also get to enjoy one of my favorite holidays, Thanksgiving. It’s one of my favorites because of all the food.
Winter is my favorite season. The weather is cold, snow falls, and I get to curl up next to a warm fire. Just like other seasons, wintertime can be full of fun adventures. We can ski, go sledding, and build snowman.
Now you might be sitting there saying to yourself, “this is interesting stuff, but do I really need to learn about the seasons”? And I say, yes you do. Everyone needs to learn about seasons.
It’s important to learn about seasons because they have an affect on almost everything. Take your manner of dress for example. How you dress is in direct relation to the season. You wouldn’t wear shorts during winter would you? No, you would too cold.
The season also influences the games you play. Would you play tennis in winter? Of course not, you would be sliding on snow. Would you go skiing in summertime? Of course not, there is no snow.
Up until this moment we have been talking about how the weather affects up, humans. But what about the animals? Animals, especially wild animals are greatly affected be seasons. Do you know how?
Animals are outside, in the weather. It stands to reason that they would be directly affected by the seasonal changes. In winter for example the leaves are off the trees, and the animals that eat foliage their food is going to be harder to find.
Animals have to prepare for seasonal change. In winter for example when food is harder to find many animals, like squirrels must gather food ahead of time. And the animals that fly south for the winter, like hummingbirds and geese spend most of the fall season fatting up for the long flight south.
Animals, like humans need to have a home. They need a place to stay when it’s cold outside. They need a place to go and get out of the sun when it’s hot outside.
As you can see and as you will learn, the changing of the seasons has a huge impact. Our Earth changes with each season and plants, animals, and humans must change with it.
We are going to spend the next few weeks taking a closer look at the many ways seasons affect the lives of animals such as squirrels, geese, bears, and snakes.
