Landfill Tax rise April 2011
Landfill Tax is a tax on the disposal of waste to landfill. It encourages waste to be diverted from
landfill by minimising the amount of waste produced and the use of non-landfill waste management
options, which might include recycling and recovery. This diversion from landfill can be seen on the
waste hierarchy diagram below.

The lower rate of landfill tax (for inert waste) is £2.50 per tonne from 1 April 2010 to 31 March 2012.
The standard rate (for active waste) is £56 per tonne from 1 April 2011 to 31 March 2012 and will
increase to:
• £64 per tonne on 1 April 2012
• £72 per tonne on 1 April 2013
• £80 per tonne on 1 April 2014
