One more EXCEL Tool : EXCEL SOLVER
Some days ago, my friend (who was in support project and worked in shifts) told me that the task of
creating the SHIFTS SCHEDULE TABLE was not being properly done. Some got more night shifts; girls did
not want to work in night shifts and many other constraints. I analyzed his problem and came up with
this solution that can ease the task of normalization. I used excel solver tool to prepare the table for
him.
Lets start with the simple problem
Problem : I was given with prices of some commodities like rice , maize, wheat alongwith four
conditions like sum of quantity of rice and wheat should be less than or equal to 5 kg and another three
listed below. I was told to find the quantity of each commodity (rice, wheat, maize) so that the total
selling price of all the three commodities can be maximized.
Here is the utilization of tool
Now , how it can be done?
First , you have to add some addons to your excel
File  options  Add-InnsExcel Add-ins goCheck Solver Add-Inok
Now , prepare the table AS ABOVE with proper formulas
D3 = B3*C3
D4 = B4*C4
D5 = B5*C5
D6 = D3+D4+D5
B8 = C3+C4
B9 = C4+C5
B10 = C3+C5
B11 = C3
Now click on in the Data menu toolbar
Now , the three steps have to be followed
 Motive : To maximize the Total Max Selling Price (D6)
 Cells to be varied(in terms of maths ,VARIABLES)
i.e quantity of all three(C3,C4,C5)
 To add the conditions , click on the add button and add the constraints as below
Now, click on SOLVE button, to see the
result.
For the guys who love to have a point of view in terms of mathematics
Problem : find the minimum value of x*x -4x + 2 where x is an integer
Ans. is -2 where x = 2
I utilized this tool to solve this problem
Try it guys
Your suggestions and queries will be most welcomed.
