We are a fusion of a large experience of
chemical engineering process with 10
years experience with R&D Techniques
on Thermal Analysis and Rheology sci-
ences for coatings, paints and adhesives
formulation. We are specialists in Calo-
rimetry ( DSC ), Isocalorimetry, Ther-
mogravimetry (TGA), Rheology Stud-
ies (Flow and Oscillation) and Dynamo
Mechanical Analysis (DMA)
characterization applied in the Coating
and Paint sector.
2. Comparison of Two European
Decorative Paint manufactu-
rers.
This case show how important is the correlation between a
TGA compositional analysis with a Rheology ( Strain
Sweep ) analysis in two European decorative paints.
TGA compositional analysis
Paint T (Green) show an important diference at 600ºC,
which correspond to an inorganic charge. Profil at 400ºC is
almost similars for both in order of polymer weight por-
centage. Final test until 900ºC shows the total residue of
inorganic charges present in the formule., 30% of Residue
for Paint T (Green ) and 22% residue for Paint E (Red).
«The correlation between Thermal and Rheo-
logy techniques is a powerfull tool on coating
formulation analysis».
RHEOLOGY Strain analysis
Rheology test (Strain Sweep) show Paint T (blue) with bet-
ter viscosity flow behavior than Paint E, even the 30% of
charges obtained on TGA analysis.
Thermal and Rheology
on Paint formulation
Many troubles are presented in a formulation pro-
cess . Sometimes there is no explanation about some
structural problems when a product is in production
plant. Or there is no explanation about some structu-
ral changes for a long periode of time in our customer
storage. Thermal and Rheology analysis are two po-
werfull techniques that will help you on your formula-
tion process.
What will you help to save Money and
Time?
Some of the next parameter will be important:
Dispersion stability a n d Sedimentation/
Flocculation prediction by Rheology.
Resins and polymers compatibilities.
VOCs and solids content percentage determina-
tion
Kinetic studies (Curing and Drying process)
Mechanical propierties post curing detemination
of the coating film
Determination of Thermal and Rheology Propier-
ties such as Cp, Tg, Melting Points, Yield Point,
Thixotropy among others

But, Paint E (Red) holds the highest percentage of de-
formation , which means better performance properties
per square meter and therefore would only be necessary
to apply a hand instead of two coats of paint. Yield
Stress of 107 Pa for Paint E and 90Pa for Paint T.
