Paddington Station, he begins to realize that city
life is not all he had imagined - until he meets
the kind Brown family. After reading the label

Blessed is the Match
She was only 22 years old when she parachuted into Nazi-
occupied Europe in an effort to save the Jews of Hungary, but
when poet and diarist Hannah Senesh was executed by the
Nazis a year later, the modern-day Joan of Arc had already left
behind a body of work and a legacy of bravery that would inspire
generations to come. NR, 2010, 90 minutes. Starts at 1 p.m.
Everyday is a Holiday
Throughout her youth and young adulthood, filmmaker Theresa
Loong recalls a cheerful father, Paul, who loved to laugh and play
pranks on his kids, but who would show occasional flashes of
anger and sadness. An innocent question about a curious scar
on his back received an “everyone has secrets” response. She
knew this much: His road to becoming an American citizen was
anything but direct. The film draws upon Paul’s experiences to
explore contemporary issues of war, immigration, and national
identity and celebrates the freedom that comes with confronting
the past and facing the future with resilience, forgiveness, and
love. NR, 2015, 60 minutes. Starts at 3 p.m.
Oil & Water
The story of two boys coming of age in the middle of one of the
world’s worst toxic disasters: the contamination of Ecuador’s
Amazon region by reckless oil drilling. Hugo comes to America to
fight for the survival of his Amazonian tribe, while David goes to
Ecuador to launch the world’s first company to certify oil as ‘fair
trade.’ Their journeys lead them to explore what could be a more
just future for people around the world born with oil beneath
their feet. Eight years in the making, it is a shocking and inspiring
David and Goliath story. NR, 2014, 60 minutes. Starts at 4:30 p.m.

This movie is a historical documentary about the Disability
Rights Movement and a biography about one man’s struggle to
survive. Charismatic leaders of the movement narrate the story
of a long, hard, and successful drive for civil rights — a drive

powerful coalition that created some of the most far reaching

Nnedi Okorafor: Nigerian American
writer and professor Nnedi Okorafor
has incorporated Nigerian cosmology,
creatures her mother told her about, and
stories she overheard the elders tell in
Nigeria into her books and short stories.
Despite the fact that her work is classified as speculative, it’s
actually not so easy to tell what’s fact and what is fiction in her
work. Nnedi Okorafor will discuss the inspirations behind her
highly imaginative works of science fiction and fantasy and
prove to you that “realistic” fiction has many faces. 90 minutes.
n East Regional 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30
Ken Liu: Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy
Award winner Ken Liu will read from his
debut short story collection, The Paper
Menagerie and Other Stories, as well as his
“silkpunk” epic fantasy novels, The Grace
of Kings and The Wall of Storms. He will also
discuss how his work is rooted in the literature of the fantastic
and inspired by Classical Chinese literature, Western epics,
paper-folding, the latest advances in science, engineering
as poetry and touch upon translation as a metaphor for
understanding all literature. 90 minutes.

his own spiritual epiphany when his dead
father visited Garth in his dreams—an experience that greatly
changed the trajectory of the novel. Garth will also talk about
magical realism and spiritual elements of his other works,
specifically Raven Stole the Moon and The Art of Racing in the
Rain. 90 minutes.

characteristic of humanity. She’ll tell stories, both funny and
moving, about her own recent experiences with the power of
stories and how they’ve shaped her life. 90 minutes.

awarded at the annual Celebration.
•	The time, date and location of the celebration will be posted at wr365.org.

NR, 2010, 90 minutes. Starts at 1 p.m. Everyday is a Holiday Throughout her youth and young adulthood, filmmaker Theresa Loong recalls a cheerful father, Paul, who loved to laugh and play pranks on his kids, but who would show occasional flashes of anger and sadness. An innocent question about a curious scar on his back received an “everyone has secrets” response. She knew this much: His road to becoming an American citizen was anything but direct. The film draws upon Paul’s experiences to explore contemporary issues of war, immigration, and national identity and celebrates the freedom that comes with confronting the past and facing the future with resilience, forgiveness, and love.
