Although golden retrievers are all one breed,
they include three variations that have
slightly different physical characteristics:
American, Canadian, and English.
American golden retrievers
One of the first things people may notice
about American golden retrievers is that
their coat is different than Canadian and
English goldens. Normally, dogs that belong
to this variety have a thicker coat than their
counterparts and darker fur than English
golden retrievers. In addition, they are
lankier and less muscular, more triangular in
shape, and have lighter eyes.
3. Golden Retriever
Canadian golden retrievers
On average, Canadian goldens are up to two inches taller than their American
and English cousins. This size difference is often the first thing people notice
when comparing the varieties. When looking in more detail, people will also
notice Canadian golden retrievers have shorter, thinner fur that is less feathery.
English golden retrievers
Finally, there are English or British golden retrievers, which have the feathery,
long coats common to the breed. They aren’t extremely different from the other
two types and have similar temperament and sizes to American goldens. The
primary difference between English goldens and the others is they have darker
eyes, broader skulls, and are more powerful.
