3. TolkienQuotePoster
In a time when all designers (and others who have no business designing) have thousands of fonts at their
fingertips, there is one guaranteed way to cut through the monotony of overused typefaces or ones that just don’t
quite fit the bill: create the type yourself.
J. R. R. Tolkien has been one of my favorite authors for most of my life, and I have always loved his quote, “Not
all who wander are lost.” The reminder that I don’t always have to have a plan and know exactly what to do to be
going in the right direction has helped me through a lot of hard times. In Tolkien’s books, there is always a lot of
action in forests, and much of his own artwork centered around intricately twisted trees, which is why I chose to
illustrate the quote this way. I used Tolkien’s own sketches and maps of Middle Earth in the background to add
some color and texture and placed his actual signature in the bottom corner.
The main design of this poster, the tree, is hand-drawn, layered over maps and drawings of Tolkien’s own
creation using a combination of Adobe Photshop and InDesign.
4. TheArtsCenterChristmasCard
This postcard, which was sent to members of The Arts Center as well as artists and other contributors, was
designed in pieces using Adobe Illustrator, then assembled with Adobe InDesign. The green swirl is repeated
from the logo, with the red elements added for variety and to add a holiday feel. The first intent was for a folded
card but evolved into a postcard design.

5. AmericanDesignMagazineLayout
From a specifc list of influential designers, I chose Jony Ive, Apple’s product designer. I knew one of the challenges of this
layout design would be to echo Apple’s trademark simple, clean look while also creating an easy-to-read article layout. I
chose right off to go with Apple’s choice font, Myriad Pro, and the gray of aluminum unibody Macbooks.
Spreads created in Adobe InDesign.
6. StairwellDesignElevationforVinyl
This design is for a back stairwell used by not only visual artists but theatre people and musicians as well.
Therefore, I wanted to keep my design universal enough to be interesting to all but present a special puzzle to
those visual artists who know the basic elements and principles of design, which are present in all forms of art.
The design needed to be vinyl-appropriate, so I was not able to incorporate gradients in the traditional sense or
truly 3D forms, making it neccessary to employ implied elements.
Done entirely in vector using Adobe Illustrator.
7. LogoParodyT-shirtDesign A parody is a work created to imitate or comment on
and trivialize an original work, its subject, author, style,
or some other target. Parody may be found in art or
culture, including literature, music, animation, gaming
and film.
The idea behind this shirt design is to represent my
college ar department by changing a well-known logo
appropriately but still keeping it recognizable as the
original. I found that many of my initial possibilities
were lost when the colors or wording were changed
and had no clear connection to the department unless I
could change these. The key was to find a simple logo
with minimal color whose typeface and shape would
connect my parody to the original. Having the perfect
combination of letters was an added bonus. Do any of
my preliminary drawings look familiar?
Created in vector with Adobe Illustrator to be cut in
heat press vinyl.
8. The Arts Center membership campaign gets a new look each year. This design for a letter size flyer and
trifold brochure were created in Adobe InDesign with elements designed in Adobe Illustrator as well as an
original painting and outline the basics of The Arts Center in general and benefits of joining.

The Arts Center holds a “Farm to Fork” fundraising dinner, featuring locally grown produce and other local food. I designed this year’s simple
logo in Adobe Illustrator and combined it with text and other elements using Adobe InDesign in different formats for various social media,
web, and print applications.
